Solo Rogue Campaign

I am just starting a solo Rogue game, which I have never done b4, and I was looking for any insight that anyone could give me. I am going to begin with the Thievery 101: Joining the Watchers and Periapt of Famidon, but I am not sure what can come after.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Base it off of the character background and what happens in the first adventure. I've found that solo games are a lot of fun especially with heavy role play.

Sounds like a good idea. My wife is gonna be the thief, and she willmost likely wanna be a "thief with a heart of gold" type, which I can work in some "double agent" for the crown type stuff at higher levels. Who knows, maybe I'll have to break out Evil by AEG or the Book of Vile Darkness for this campaign if she decides to throw me a loop! LOL

In 2nd edition, TSR started coming out with solo adventures. IIRC- they had one or two for a thief, but I would be hard pressed to come up with a title.

You could check out information on the old tv show "The Saint"- it was about a thief who stole from criminals.

The Thief computer games could be a good source for ideas as well- you could look for faq's on the game and just read them on what the missions were like.

Traps&Treachery had a cool thief PrC that has a base of operations in once city.

Good luck!

Traps & Treachery is on my ref list.

Great idea about the Faqsheets and I totally forgot about the 2e adventures. Gonna have to go the SVgames to hunt down some ESD's!

Thanks!

Depends on what kind of thing she likes, I guess. A kind of "Enemy of the State" type plot (ala the movie with Will Smith) would be something my wife would really enjoy, although something ala "The Saint" would be fun too.

Keep in mind, the rogue is not necessarily a thief -- the rogue is a very flexible class that can be used for all kinds of different archetypes.

I really liked the Thievery 101 series and lament Wyverns' Claw's departure from publishing.

I would highly recommend you read Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser series by Fritz Leiber, which are filled with fun an larceny. If you can find copies of Gygax's Gord novels, they're also inspiring for solo rogue work!

In terms of structuring encounters, Dragon had some decent guidelines are setting up ELs. Basicaly, the rule about doubling the number of creatures of a given CR creating an EL=CR+2 can be used for parties of varying numbers as well. So you will generaly want her opponents to be of a CR=her level-4. This might mean a single orc, kobold, or goblin would be a legit challenge at first level....

Sounds about right, though it might be spotty depending on the hit die of the chosen class.

If your wife is going solo as a Rogue you might want to get her to take a level or two of Fighter

The extra feats and HP can come in handy

Also look into Swashbuckling Adventures. The rapier fighting PRC's are kind of strong for regular D&D but hey-- there is only her. One good non fighting PRC from there is Man of Will-- extra HP and a strong will save is nice

Oh and encourage her and give her xp for being sneaky, very sneaky. If she does her job right she should make Garret from Thief the Dark Project look like an orc marching band

. I have run two seperate "rogues" games one with 2 players, 1 with 3 and they are a blast. I actually prefer them to regular games in many ways.

There is always a scam or a caper just around the corner

Solo Rogues are great, because they can pretty much do anything (with Use Magic Device).

Base the game off the PC's background and let him direct the focus of the game. React and respond to the PCs actions.

Avoid dungeon crawls (for the most part; pilfering an ancient tomb or vault would be fun), and instead run "city crawls".
