Some confusion about Improved Grab.

And if you think THAT's nasty:

Constrict (Ex): A creature with this special attack can crush an opponent, dealing bludgeoning damage, after making a successful grapple check. The amount of damage is given in the creature's entry. If the creature also has the improved grab ability it deals constriction damage in addition to damage dealt by the weapon used to grab

If it has constrict, you take BOTH damages.

Every time they make a grapple check.

OUCH.

On the creature's turn, they could move you around and deal the damage, so long as they won the check, try to pin, or even use the opponents OWN light weapon against him! You don't have to bother attacking yourself!

Slightly off topic...is the only reason you'd want to use the Damage Your Opponent technique instead of the Attack Your Opponent one is to get this grapple check, and deal subdual damage?

eh, i dunno, i mean, yeah it "says" that but jeshus! After re-reading the improved grab in 3.5 MM it says they can move away provided they can lift the weight. So this is beyond what the normal grapple rules for moving with someone are then?

It would appear so.

People grappling, well, that's learned.

But things with improved grab do this to survive (ankheg, roc), they don't suffer those limitations, they're built to do that.

Where would you draw the line for that then...animals, magical beasts, and aberrations all have that "ability" when it comes to their improved grab?

So a giant would still need to make a grapple check to move?

See, that gets to the point I never liked. I think a giant should be able to pick up a puny human and run away with he/she if it wants to.

Check the 'hurl' feat in Savage Species :)

Giants train to use weapons, not their bodies, hence they don't get 'Improved Grab'. And since they don't know how to do it perfectly like rocs and such, they still gotta content with squirming opponents.

Big-ass talons can hold a squirming victin a lot easier than a hand (compare an eagle holding a fish to you holding a fish)

I'm da fish mastah!! Ok, I see your point, and I'll go along with it because it too makes sense in my mind. Grappling still needs to be a bit more clarified, ahh 4th edition.

P.S. I really think it is silly that some monsters have Toughness feat, mainly 'cause I think it is a silly feat, but just wanted to rant real quickly here as the Ankheg has toughness

Cthulu has Toughness. It helps to bring his hit points to a nice round 666 :)
