Some PrC's I designed

I need some help with PrC design.

Please take a look at the PrC's I've designed and let me know what you think. You can post your responses here or e-mail me. If you post your responses, of course, it will keep this thread visible longer, so more people can read the PrC descriptions and post their responses, and so forth.

Thanks!

re:Mage Hunter

This PrC seems a bit overpowered, and maybe a little ill-focused, too.

At first blush, you get all good saves, good BAB, d10hp and 4 skill points a level. That's an awful lot without adding any other abilities. Then there's some very potent damage bonuses from 2nd onwards, (weak) spell resistance at 1st level, and Divine Grace at 3rd level.

It's a bit too much, if you ask me. (And you did :D)

There's also very little to help in attacking spellcasters, other than BAB and the damage bonuses. Specifically, there's no mobility powers and no means to overcome or remove magical protections.

I'd suggest dropping the BAB to the second tier, and maybe lowering the HD. This makes the PrC fairly similar to the Monk, and seeing as it's going to have a lot of magical abilities, that seems a good point of comparison.

I recommend dropping the added damage and increased critical range abilities. In their place, try adding:

A power that creates a targetted Dispel Magic effect with each hit. Make the caster level equal to class level, and grant the ability at 5th. (Optionally, give a +2 bonus to this at 10th level.)

Some sort of travel power. Either something like the Epic Feat, Spell Stowaway, or just Dimension Door.

A power that limits the effectiveness of defensive magic. Good ways to present this might be by giving a bonus to attack equal to the lesser of the Mage Hunter's class level and the targets Deflection/Luck bonus. Alternatively, you could just give a scaling bonus to attacks against spellcasters. Either of these, combined with the 2nd tier BAB, would bring forth the Mage Hunter's specialisation.

Mettle (from DoF) and/or Evasion.

Now, the stupid thing is, just last night I was commenting on another thread that a PrC was overpowered because it had two good saves, fighter BAB, d10 hit die and 4 skill pts/level. Now here I have a PrC that is exactly like that, only with three good saves! Doh!

Well, this one one of the earliest PrC's I designed, and it ended up at the time going into my "unfinished and unbalanced" collection because it was, well, unfinished and unbalanced. I didn't go back and change anything before putting on the web site.

I just did a significant re-write of this PrC, with the following changes:

  • Decreased hit die to d8
  • Decreased BAB progression to cleric BAB
  • Magic-Seeking Strike now begins at 2nd level and increases +1 at every even level
  • Threat to casters now at 5th level, not 6th
  • Can use abilities against creatures with spell-like abilities at 9th now, not 8th
  • Targetted dispel 1/day at 3rd level, additional uses at 6th and 9th

While the attack bonus from the magic-seeking strike is now gained earlier and increases more frequently, it is offset by the reduction of the BAB. A 10th level mage hunter before had a BAB of +10 and +2 from this ability, while a 10th level mage hunter now has a BAB of +7 and +5 from this ability. Against spellcasters, then, the mage hunter has the same total attack bonus, but he is now weaker against non-spellcasters. (The attack bonuses do differ now at other levels, but not significantly).

Some of the other PrC's probably also need some reconsideration. I've had lots of comments on the kineticist in the past, and I think I have that one about right, but I'm still open to new ideas. However, I have never had a single comment on the spell taker. I want to know what people think about that PrC
