If we do trust that tieflings are core races, does that make warlock a base class?

Oooo...good thought. I'd bet so. It coincides with the rapid refresh (in other words, no refresh) of spellcasters.

I'd bet barbarian goes...
Nope, barbarian is specifically mentioned in the article. That's the only current class mentioned by name. "Fighter-types" get a mention, as well as "the mage."

Sounds like Bard and Monk to me.

Though probably either Sorcerer or Wizard could be added, too...though I'm not sure which.

New spell refresh rules would seem to make the sorcerer obsolete.

If it's done like Star Wars, five clases only:

Cleric
Fighter
Rogue
Wizard
NPC

At first level and even levels you get a talent. Talents trees are class specific.

Barbarians are fighters with a mix of power attack and hunting / animal totem talents.

Monks are fighters with a mix of unarmed strike and celerity talents.

Rangers are multiclass fighters with TWF or ranged talents and clerics with nature talents.

Makes sense to me. With 3.5 you have so many class level subs. No two wizards are alike, so you might as well make talent trees. It's great for optimizers and at the same time simple to introduce to new players.

Sorcerer-wizard merge.

Paladin, Bard, Monk, Ranger: there is a lot to choose from right there.

Barbarian, Cleric, and (at least a type of) Fighter safe.

I really hope they merge the wizard and sorcerer. I always thought it was awful they had both.... for god's sake, make up your mind and pick one! They're not different enough to justify two whole base classes.

If they do something like Star Wars Talent Trees they could probably scale things back to something like Wizard/Fighter/Cleric/Rogue and just use talent trees to customize out into Bard/Paladin/Barbarian/Monk/Druid. I think the talent trees would have to be very well thought out, though, otherwise everyone will end up looking the same.

[edit]

Ug... why keep barbarian? It only has one thing that makes it unique - rage. Otherwise it's just a fighter. Rangers and druids and bards and paladins at least all have a wide range of special abilities. Not only that, but barbarian is almost more of a role-playing choice than a class choice.
