Someone is Bringing Pizza to the Game Tonight

Pizza: What is Your Preference?

Yes to the anchovies! Actually, yes to pretty much anything except pineapple - pineapple on pizza is the worst thing ever. Ever.

[sarcastic] This poll is deeply flawed. Without knowing if it has been ordered with or without Pepperoni, I find it too limiting to make an informed choice. [/sarcastic]

Seems like such an arbitrary thing to stick on a pizza.
Well, anchovies are a Roman "invention" (well, maybe they didn't invent the fish itself, but the kind that come cured in tins), and have long been used as the basis for sauces, including Caesar salad dressing. In fact they where the basis of a staple dish in Roman times (can't remember the name off the top of my head), and where a pretty big deal as a trade item.

Being from Italy, it's not too surprising that they ended up on pizza. They are also supposed to be an aphrodisiac, at least in their raw form. In most dishes they are used as a flavoring and not as a main ingredient, as the flavor is so strong, but I do enjoy them on pizza, myself. I find they're better cooked on, so that the oils and flavor bakes into the sauce - some places seem to put them on the pizza after it comes out of the oven. Eating them raw (and they're cured, so it's not really raw...) they are extremely salty and have a very strong oily flavor (most oily fishes do).

I wanted to vote for pizza with lemon curry. Imagine my surprise that this was the one EN World poll that didn't happen to have that option.

I am a Pizzastorian, and I must point out that pizza is not Italian food. I have it on good authority that it is actually British, having been adopted as a Boxing Day treat in memory of the quest of King Authur to chop a shrubbery down with a herring (anchovies were instead chosen due to their strong smell, reminiscent of elderberries).

Anchovies are a must on pizza:p. Unfortunately one of the gaming group has deadly seafood allergies:erm:. Also the host of the game bans them from his house due to their powerful aroma:.-(.

As I am sure this poll will soon reflect, not all can appreciate the rich, proud taste of anchovies. I understand. Some people can't handle strong, awesome flavors. This is why they make mild salsa, white chocolate, light beer, American cheese, etc.

Hey, I don't judge...it's your money; order what you like. For my dollar, I'll have anchovies. And extra garlic, and chopped pepperoccinis on the side, please.
