I expect that Syrio is still alive and managed to escape Ser Meryn. The First Sword of Braavos did not run because he was busy fighting to buy time for Arya to escape. When she had done so, Syrio might then make his escape.

While Arya leaves him Syrio armed only with a stick, there are five swords lying on the floor about him from the red cloaks he had already slain. Syrio was *fast*.

Ser Meryn was no match for Syrio Forel in a duel of blades, armored or not.

Given that Arya makes her way to Braavos, it would surprise me greatly if Syrio does not turn up again in some form.

GRRM accomplished the same dramatic effect of "killing" Syrio in GoT in the manner in which he wrote the scene. Nothing is lost and much is gained by having him appear later as a positive force in a life whic appears to be sliding into murderous rage for Arya Stark.

Unless of course, GRRM has decided to make the Faceless Girl truly psychotic (which may well be).

As for Syrio being Jaquen Haghar, I think not.

Presently I am listening to the audio of Game of Thrones, Joff and Sansa are up on the tower with her father's head and a lot of her father's house hold. Where I would think that Syrio would be mentioned- he was not. :uhoh:

Course very few people were mentioned, but it was a perfect moment to mention someone like the sword master. Joff did not mention, and neither did Sansa. I think he's still alive, though I am uncertain as to how.

Thanks for all the in put. Have a great week and support George, we need him to get on with the tail.

Oh... wow. I love that!
I was just being blithely ambiguous. I am probably wrong, but... who knows? ;)

Trant did appear later on in aCoK and aSoS and he was the same arrogant jackass that he was earlier, so either he's alive or someone very, very good at his job is impersonating him.

I can't remember, but he may also have been one of the knights who abused Sansa at Joffrey's behest in aCoK.

I am listening to the audio version of a Game of Throwns, about two years after reading the books. My wife and I can't remember what happens to Syrio Forel (Arya's dance teacher). Does anyone recall if he dies or if Martin just leaves it hanging that Ser Meryn kills him?

Harmon, I just reread the three books again. I didn't see anything on our favorite "dance teacher" after his duel with Ser Meryn, but then I was not looking either. Meryn does reappear however.

Much as I would like to think that Syrio survives I do not think he could unless he just simply ran- he could have made his escape easily- unarmored man can out run armored, but would he?

I'm guessing he make his escape, after he made sure Arya was away.

Gotta disagree about Syrio=Jaquen (despite the cool factor). For one thing, their character voices are very different, and Jaquen's "voice" stays the same even after he changes his face.

All twenty eight discs completed, from Syrios last to the last disc he was not mentioned again in anyway other then in Arya's mind.

Just bought Clash of Kings from Audio.Com, and transferred it to disc- well the first 7 discs. I will listen for hints of Syrio in the coming 28 discs.

Silver, glad to see you posting again. Feeling and doing better, I hope?

Syrio = Jacquen? Who in their right mind would posit such a guess?

Right. That'd be me. Truly, it was just a facilitator for my hope of Syrio's survival. In my reread of the books, it didn't seem very likely they were one and the same, especially since Jacquen has a "date" with a certain kraken, and Syrio was there to teach Arya, possible for several years still.

But Syrio = Meryn... I like that. :)

"Fast as a deer."

Syrio was smart. He could do no good to anyone (including himself) while he was dead. The more I think about it and listen to Arya's chapters I can't help but feel that he survived by running away.
