Sorcerer Spell Review

HiddenLineage

First Post
So hey everyone, new here and finally wrapped my mind around arcane casters in D&D. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on improving my spell list, or if it's alright as is?

I've never been a fan of Magnificient Mansion since it's so situational. Limited Wish is a better 7th level spell as it adds a great deal to versatility.

Evil Glare, Maddening Whispers and Wrathful Castigation sound nice, but being mind-affecting is a major problem at high levels since there are many creatures who will be flat-out immune.

Spell Vulnerability lowers SR, but requires a fortitude save. Fortitude is often the best save on many monsters, and some (undead, constructs) are immune to effects requiring a fortitude save unless it also works on objects or is harmless.

You currently have no means of dispelling magic, which can be a major problem.

I'd suggest you replace
Spell Vulnerability with Melf's Unicorn Arrow (PHB2) or Great Thunderclap (SpC)
Illusory Pit with Greater Dispel Magic
Evil Glare and Magnificent Mansion with Limited Wish and Avasculate (SpC) or Waves of Exhaustion (no save!)
Wrathful Castigation and Maddening Whispers with Mind Blank and Greater Arcane Fusion (CM) or Telekinetic Sphere or Moment of Prescience or Maze.

You don't have to use the exact spell suggestions, obviously, but you want spells that will be broadly useful and affect a wide variety of enemies and situations.

Here's a nice trick to help: Limited Wish can duplicate the effects of Psychic Reformation, allowing you to reshuffle your spell choices if you ever want to change them.

So what would you suggest in their place? I put the Mansion in so we'd never have to have anyone standing guard, and I can carry virtually unlimited loot back to town to sell.

Edit: I should mention that I'm going Mage of the Arcane Order as soon as I can.

I've already edited in suggestions.

If you want to carry unlimited loot back to town, just buy a few bags of holding. If you want sleep without anyone standing guard, use the Spellpool to call in a Rope Trick or unlearn a second level spell in favor of it.

Invisibility and Mirror Image are less useful at higher levels due to the large amount of enemies with True Seeing, Scent, Blindsense, Blindsight, and etc.

Yes.

Sorry about editing my posts post post (I did it again in the second post, you might want to check that out just in case) but sometimes I think of wonderful things much later.

A lot of it comes down to personal preference. You'll want to select versatile spells that cover important roles. Spell analysis is important.

For example, let's take Ruby Ray of Reversal. What do you plan on using it for?

They spell allows for a variety of uses, but several of them seem to be obsoleted by spells you have/should have.

1. Spring magical and mundane traps. Disintegrate and Greater Dispel Magic take care of this one.
2. Untie knots, unlocks restraining devices. Again, Disintegrate could take care of this one, as could the second level spell Shatter. (Something to replace Mirror Image with?)
3. Entangle and similar magical effects are dispelled. Dispel Magic could do this.
4. Doors that are locked, barred, or subject to arcane lock are dispelled. Again, Disintegrate, Shatter, and/or Dispel Magic could do this.
5. Create a 5ft diameter hole in a Wall of Force or Force Cage. Disintegrate destroys the entire thing.
6. A creature that has been polymorphed or changed from its original form is returned to its natural state. This is something that would not be entirely undone by Dispel Magic. Limited Wish could do it, though, for 300 xp.
7. A Magic Jar spell is dispelled if you cast Ruby Ray of Reversal on the magic gem. the text of Magic Jar states that "destroying receptacle ends the spell" so you could just Disintegrate it. Or dispel it.
8. Destroy movement hindering greases, slimes, and etc. You ride a Phantom Steed which can walk over difficult terrain, air, water, and can fly.

It's a cool spell, it just seems kinda pointless unless you run into a lot of people who get Baleful Polymorphed or turned into stone.

I didn't think about that. Also with Greater Arcane Fusion, what's the rule on touch range spells combined with ranged touch spells such as rays?

Edit: Also looking at new 6th level spells.
