Sorceres get screwed when it comes to SP

Well, sorcerers /do/ spend a lot less time learning to be sorcerers than wizards spend learnign to be wizards - years less time, which is why they start as young as 16...

And, if one is looking for justifications, let us remember that being cloistered with books is not the only way to learn. The fact that he's not cloistered with books doesn't mean the sorcerer isn't busy learning and practicing - having it come "naturally" doesn't necessarily mean it comes easily. Natural prodigies still have to practice.

The rather bizarre thing about sorcerers is that it specifically says that because the sorcerer doesn't have to study as much as wizards "they start with proficiency in all simple weapons".

Wha?

What sane sorcerer, with his 1d4hp and no armour, is going to spend time training with *any weapons at all*?

IMO they should have given sorcerers the same weapons as wizards and 4sp per level (explained in character as they are not spending time studying for the new 2 spells per level that wizards study for, and explained in mechanics (as noted by Mooby) that they typically don't have the huge Int that Wizards do).

Cheers

No offense, Plane, but I saw more than one sorcerer with crossbow and shortspear or other weapons in melee. Sure, they could do better.

Have you ever met those halforc or human sorcerers with dump stats INT and WIS, wielding greataxes and shooting magic missiles? Or gnome sorcerers with toad familiar and CON 22?

Honestly, a human sorcerer with good physical stats and a big axe as well as toughness feat is fun. It may not be munchkinised, but it's fun. Is anyone out there still playing for fun? :D

Back to the start: In my campaigns, players don't go somewhere to spend their prepared spells and go resting when they have spent their resources. So it's common that the groups sorcerer and wizard have to use weapons and wear armours (at least keep them around).

I see, you are of the Rincewindian persuasion. :D

He won't use weapons, too. Because, if they encounter someone with a weapon, they just strike. But if they encounter an unarmed guy, they might stop to chat. Although this is often chit-chat on how they kill you, it buys you time. You can use this time. For example, you can use it to live longer in. :D

Here are a few thoughts.

You don't have to have the proficiently to wear the armor (right guys?) and since sorcerers get lots of spells per day but only a few known spells, if they are wearing thier leather or padded armor and they fail their spell check on round one they can cast it on round two.

True strike and any weapon are really powerful combo.

Short spears are you friend.

I think the second most important stat for sorcerers is CON. Get thos HP up there. A sixth level gnome sorcerer with a 22 CON (toad familiar) with +4 from endurance (so that's what a total of 26). With Mage Armor +4 AC, Shield +7 AC, and haste +4 AC, can wade into melee with an AC of 27 (12 DEX), on average 52.5 HP. He can cast 2 burning hands per round for 10d4 damage. Or he could cast two shocking grasps per round for d8+6 each time.

For comparison sake, a level 6 fighter W/18 con would ahve on average 61 HP and he too would only get two attacks (yeah there are exceptions).

g!

I actually had a human wizard that ended up with a little over 30 constitution. He as an oriental fellow with a flowing mustache and a fetish for cats. So much so infact that every one of his normal feats were "Extra Familiar" where he got another cat. Ended up with 6 of them and the chance for two more! My DM was kind enough to abolish the 5 foot spell rule.

But as a house rule we actually only changed two things for a sorcerer. They gain 4 skill points a level instead of 2. And they are proficient in all simple and martial weapons.

That's in. No BAB change, no resistance change, no hit point change. Just a a lot more practical experiance.

PSIONS

I know, I know, this thread is about sorcs, but I just *haaaaaaave* to bring up my pet class . . . .

Psions ROCK at both Melee and Ranged combat. Give them Gell Shot or Deep Impact, make them a Nomad for Ranged, or an Egoist or Savant for melee, and you have your Psion spending half his actions pondering weather a volley of 3 Fell Shot arrows or a True Concussion would look cooler.
