Sorceress spell selection

Knock was more of a "dunno what to take here" choice, but so far we have neither another wiz/sorc nor a rogue, so it might be ok.

I'm not sure about the new Cat's Grace and the like... don't know, if they are worth it now, there are just too many spells to cast at the start of encounters, so these will be used rarely if ever, I suppose... and I havn't found many other 2nd level spells of interest (maybe Levitate? Rope Trick?).

Personally, I really like Glitterdust at second level. Prevents people from going invisible for a while and blinds them on a failed will save. Since it affects an area, you don't have to know exactly where they are when you cast it either.

Damn. I just submitted a Wizard to play a PbP adventure... if I had read this thread and realized how many spells a Sorcerer can actually know, and how useful a good selection may prove, I would have made a Sorcerer instead.

;)

Don't worry, since most PbP games are rather low level, the Wizard is much more rewarding in this area (I've played a low level Sorcerer, it's kinda ugly how few spells you know then). The Sorcerer starts to shine once you reach moderately high levels. Well, that's the theory at least... as this is my first one to (hopefully) advance to higher levels! :)

Problem with Glitterdust is, that See Invisbility is much better for the purpose of invisibility detection (since Glitterdust doesn't help there at all). It's surely a good spell, but if you have only 5 total, it just doesn't make it.

You only need to know the area where the invisible person is, not the exact location, to target Glitterdust. Once you've found them with Glitterdust, everyone can see the (formerly) invisible opponent.

Bat familiars can help a lot with the location problem.

Yep, you have to know someone's there, then Glitterdust can help. See Invisibility already helps with the first step. Altho Glitterdust has more utility (helps others and blinding), I still prefer See Invisibility for this very reason.

You're an incantrix! What're you doing focusing on buffing? x4 empowered fireball is far better than any 7th level spell. X6 empowered fireball is far stronger than any 9th level spell. x7 empowered Eagle's Splendor will make your spells nearly impossible to save against, not to mention giving you a heckuva lot of extra spells. Forget Twin Spell! A x2 empowered spell will do the same, for one less cost (thanks to improved metamagic).
I do applaud you for clever use of the quicken spell feath though. Nice job for that.

Don't forget that See Invisibility lets only the caster see invisible things. Glitterdust lasts much less but targets the invisible things which then everyone is able to see.

Yes, but I noticed that after 3-4 levels a Sorcerer starts getting more free spells than the Wizard, who can scribe any extra spell but the cost becomes higher and higher.

My opinion in general is that at low levels the biggest challenge for the Wizard is the very small amount of spells combined with the burden of preparation, while for the Sorcerer is that she may cast the same few spells over and over. From level 4th or 5th, the two problems go away, and instead the Sorcerer may start suffering the 1-spell-level lag behind, but he gains even more flexibility with metamagic.

At higher levels, they both rock! :) In the PbP game we are starting at level 1, so I decided to be a Wizard, because I slightly prefer to face his problems rather than the Sorcerer's limits (and with Scribe Scroll I'll try to soften the situation), but if we had started from at least level 4th I would have chosen a Sorcerer just to have less spells to remember how to use well :p
