There's a 3.5? Man, I am soooo out of the loop sometimes. Does it have the same magic system?

Wait... I'll just wait for your review.

If you mean that it has a number to match that you do over various rounds until matched, that uses four traditional elements and the void, then yes. Still messing around with that part.

I got a free copy thanks to their promotional contest. It isn't bad - it's at least what you would expect from an upgrade to the 3.5 SRD. I'm not sure I see any fundamental issues with the book itself, though I question a couple of the choices made regarding races, skills, and so forth. Just minor niggling things. Unhorsed dwarves and their pony-riding cousins seem utterly opposed to each other in terms of ability score mods, for example, which is more extreme than I figured.

I look forward to seeing your review of the book. I keep looking for reviews here at ENWorld for books that aren't PDFs, to be honest.

Cheers,
Cam

Ah, I didn't know it was out, either. I liked the original, but it's awfully hard to run a d20 variant or a d20 setting that is noticeably different from standard when there is such little support for it. (Though to be fair, support was good in the early days, but then got sparse I guess because it didn't sell, and then was pretty much dropped when they got Dragonlance)

And Sov. Stone was both. What with different magic and classes, and with standard races but twists to them. (Horse riding dwarves, hot ork babes)

So I just canniballized it for my own setting.

On the plus side, I noticed that the magic system apparently was used in Thieves' World.

Not exactly. We worked with the core concept of rolling until you hit a threshold, but we took it in a different direction... D&D spells, ritual magic, different rates of progression, fixed MT's based on spell level, and so on. However, yes, I am a big fan of Sovereign Stone's magic system, current and the original. Hence the homage :)

I picked it up at Gen Con. I don't see any big diferences except from an upgrade in the art. I wasn't a fan of the magic as I think there is pleanty of room for abuse with healing magic. You can see my review of the original on this site.

Upgrade in art? There are several color pieces (usually in chapter breaks), but I thought Elmore did all the art the first time around too?

And one of the things that's on the "annoyance" meter thus far, are the typos. It looks like every fighter based class lost that 4th attack. Lots of 'smudge' in the art too like it was badly inserted/copied.

There also seems to be some... confusion as to the book being OGL or d20 in some spots as they seem to repeat some information already found in the core books without really changing it.

In some ways, I can tell the book isn't aimed at me. The whole elves as samurai and dwarves as mongol warriors, isn't working well for me. I can see where it's coming from, it's just not my thing so far.

I'll have to go home and pull out my old copy but if I recall corectly just about the only Piece of Elmore art in it was the cover. I thought their monster book had substandard art (I could have done better work) too, but that's another story.

My major problem with the magic system is that the players can pretty much heal completely between every encounter. It might take 5 castings of one of the lower level heal spells but they wouldn't have to worry about botching at all.
