Funny? Pointed with commentary? Sure.
But it ain't high cinema, that's for sure.
Well, they did give him an Oscar for screenwriting on The Producers.
Beyond comedy, Mel Brooks was intentionally uncredited for his work on The Elephant Man and Cronenberg's remake of The Fly. There are others, too.
Brooks' experience with "The 12 Chairs" showed him the public would expect anything with his name to be a comedy. So he founded the Brooksfilms company largely so he could work on a wider variety of movies without being burdened by people getting the wrong idea whenever his name was attached.
