Special attacks and attacks of opportunity

Carlos Neto

First Post
Hi everyone!

My question is simple. Can I make a special attack in my attack of opportunity? Like trip, disarm, sunder, etc.

I have create a char fighter, level 3, human withchain, expertise, imp. trip, imp. disarm and combat reflexes. dex 18. So if I can make a trip attack instead of a regular attack it will become a real war machine against humanoids.

I don't know if someone come here with this doubt, I have look for it and just can't find anything about it.

oh, sorry about my bad english.

Most of them, yes. Sunder used to be a standard action in 3.0.

Just look at each manoevers description, if it states something like "as a melee attack" than you can do it.

What Darklone said.

I think the biggest controversy comes in for trip. Since standing up draws AOO, can you trip while somebody is standing up? It is still debatable, but I think the general consensus is that a trip would interrupt the stand up attempt and therefore be useless since the opponent would still be prone. Since you can't trip a prone opponent ...

It could be argued back and forth, but think about it in terms of fun and playability and it makes sense to not allow a trip attempt when somebody is getting up. I mean, would you really want your DM to make a trip-based NPC to throw at you? What fun! You get to spend the whole night trying to resolve trip attempts.

Just so you're sure -- in the PHB chapter on Combat, there's a table called "Miscellaneous Actions". (In 3.0 PHB it's table 8-4.) At the end of that table you'll find a note that says what you're looking for.

From the SRD:
Action Type Varies
------------------
Disarm7 Yes
Grapple7 Yes
Trip an opponent7 No
Use feat8 Varies
...
7 These attack forms substitute for a melee attack, not an action. As melee attacks, they can be used once in an attack or charge action, one or more times in a full attack action, or even as an attack of opportunity.

Casting Raise Thread
Hmm, It's been dead for 21 days. I would need to be Epic level to do that. How about Resurrect Thread - Yeah, that works.

I was thinking about this today and I wanted to check a few things. Is there a chart in the 3.5 SRD that list what actions can be used like a melee attack?

If not, it's no big deal, but I can't find one in my SRD. Maybe I need a different SRD?

Yes, there is - dcollins quoted it just above.

It's here. The big table at the top of the page.

Look for anything with Footnote 7. That's Trip, Grapple, and Disarm.

How in the heck did I miss that the three times I looked? Must have been low-blood sugar or something.

Thanks! :)

OK, so using a trip against a Bull Rush or an Overrun triggered AoO is a possibility. You just have to refer to the rules FAQ to see that you can't do a trip as an AoO when the target is standing up from prone.

Edit: I was goofy and misread the table. Changed my post.

Well, you can, but the FAQ's take on it is that since the AoO occurs before the provoking action is resolved, you end up tripping someone who is still prone, before they stand up. ... at which point, after your AoO is over, they stand up.
