Special Conversion Thread: Will o' wisps

That's fine, though I'm having trouble reconciling myself to such a strong wisp! I could happily trade some Str for Con or even more Dex.

I'm okay with having a strong wisp. It is serpentine in shape... perhaps it strikes with its body?
Ahh, but it's only attack in the original text is a lightning bolt. Though you could convince me to give it a slam attack rather than a melee shock.

Well, ice storm doesn't allow for spell resistance anyway. In this case, we might want to expand to all spells that deal cold damage.

If there's a difference between spells that do cold damage and spells with the cold descriptor, I'd say spells with the cold descriptor. That just feels right.

There is! Prismatic spray, for example, can do energy damage, but just has the light descriptor.
I knew there must be an example somewhere. So let's have the descriptor do something. ;) Besides, I kind of think spells have descriptors for this purpose (though I guess golems go against that).

These creatures have shown themselves to be adept at mimicking the shape of a ship or lighthouse. The will o’ sea, unlike the will o’ wisp, is unable to turn invisible, but can dampen its glow somewhat.

It looks like we should drop the natural invisibility. Do anything with the rest, other than flavor text? Maybe a racial bonus to emulate a ship?

If it appears as if the inhabitants of a vessel are going to escape with their lives, the will o’ sea will take a more direct approach, using its vast energies to attack with a powerful lighting bolt. The evil entity can release such a stroke once every three rounds. The bolt does 10-60 (10d6) points of damage and has a 50% chance of setting wooden vessels alight if a saving throw vs. lightning fails.

Like so?

Lightning Bolt (Su): Once every 1d3 rounds, a will-o'-sea can unleash a 120-foot-long line of lightning that deals 10d6 points of electricity damage (Reflex DC X halves this damage). The lightning bolt sets fire to combustibles and damages objects in its path. It can melt metals with a low melting point, such as lead, gold, copper, silver, or bronze. If the damage caused to an interposing barrier shatters or breaks through it, the bolt may continue beyond the barrier if the range permits; otherwise, it stops at the barrier just as a spell effect does. The save DC is Constitution-based.

I borrowed the range from the storm elemental's ability and the lightning bolt spell.
