Speeding up Combat

Another 4e article is up at This Modern Death and At the Table. This post is about speeding up combat while at the same time adding more tension to each roll of the d20. Check it out and let me know what you think.

This won't work in 4e even a little. It totally bones the class roles in obvious ways—for instance, it's a striker's job to contribute attacks and a defender's job to attract enemy attacks. Neither of these make sense in an action/reaction system as described in the post in question; they both rely on using battle conditions rather than a simple attack/AC diferential to create imparity in their hits taken/given.

Since these powers and features are all irrelevant in this system, strikers and defenders are left out in the cold, while leaders and controllers get a substantial boost, since leaders can generate attacks that don't originate from the leader himself, and controllers will be able to use their ranged attacks in disproportionate safety, because without some bizarre patch rules, they can't be counterattacked with an enemy's melee power when thatenemy is 10 squares away.
