Spell Compendium - Which spells have been altered?

Cleric: Spell Level Changes

I'm going through and (finally) updating my master spell index with the info from Spell Compendium. I didn't note which bard spells changed level, but I'm working on Cleric now, and I started a list of spells that have changed levels. I'll make other posts with the other spellcasting classes as I get to them.

Edit: This one might make some of you nitpickers happy. Defenestrating sphere now comes with actual defenestration! If there is a window nearby, the victim is automatically chucked in that direction. :D

Dude, that's awesome. Defenestrate has been my favorite word since 1987, when I first learned it. I was so annoyed by a spell called defenestrating sphere that didn't defenestrate anything! :confused: :mad:

Has anyone out there compiled a list of spells now listed in the Spell Compendium which have been changed from earlier versions? By "changed" I mean significant change, not just a name change (i.e. change in spell level or in basic operation of the spell).

It was nice of WoTC to produce a list of spells whose names had changed but I would have found it more useful if they told me which ones had operational changes that way I don't have to look up every spell that I use.

The spell matrix spells have had the number of spells they can hold reduced. I don't remember for sure how many the originals could hold (The Symbul's Spell Matrix, etc, from Magic of Faerun) but the new versions hold like 1, 2, and 3 spells (I believe it used to be a random number that could be held, but I'm not sure).

I knew there were some changes, I was not aware of just how many there were.

I'm gratified, as I really do like the Spell Compendium and immediately added it to my campaign as the "official source" of the spell and banned all previous incarnations that were duplicated in the Spell Compendium.

Despite the hooplah surrounding the PHBII and the DMGII, IMO, no book WotC put out last year (or the year before that) is as damn useful at the gaming table as the Spell Compendium.

After the Core Rules, it's easily the next most important D&D 3.x hardcover, imo.

As CGoat mentioned, Spikes was changed to 1 round/level. Seriously needed it.

Improvisation went from a 5th level Bard spell to a 1st level Bard spell.

Finished the cleric list. If I get time, I'll go back later & add what (if anything) was changed with each spell, but I think that kind of thing will take way more time than I'll have...

To answer GrayLinnorm's eight-month-old question: there were quite a few changes. Old version of fire spiders specified 240 spiders were created in the area of effect, and you had to calulate the amount of damage deal to victim based on how many spiders were in the square. They moved on their own, and required a material component worth 500gp. New version simply says that it deals 4d6 damage, you can control where they go, and requires only a pinch of sulphur as material component.

Blackguard

Spell level changes for...

BLACKGUARD

Blade of Pain and Fear: 1 -> 2
Blessed Aim: 2 ->1
Demonhide: 3 -> 2
Know Greatest Enemy: 3 -> 1
Unholy Storm: 4 -> 3
Weapon of the Deity: 4 -> 3

Close Wounds didn't just change level, it also changed in how it works. The old MH version healed 2d4. The new version 1d4 + caster level (max 5).

Compared with the version in Unapproachable East, Ball Lightning no longer allows the caster to create multiple balls which can be used against multiple targets. It does more damage, and has a higher damage cap, but a successful Reflex save now negates all damage instead of only half. The lightning ball also moves a lot slower now.

Divine Agility for Clerics was changed to +10 Dex for 1/round/level

it used to be
+4 Dex
Base Reflex Save rises to that of a rogue of the same level (essentially becoming good instead of poor)
Spring Attack Feat

also Sacophagus of Stone (pg. 180)
fails to include level, components, casting time, range and area/targets in the main entry.
