spell experience points?

You can´t find anything about it because there´s nothing to find. Class-related bonus XP, like xp for casting spells, per HD of defeated monsters, gold coins gathered etc., have been removed from the game.

100 points per level sound good? I can't find anything in the books about it.... -Jim

If you did that a sorcerer would gain levels very fast since the can cast so many spells per day. The only way to get XP is through the Challenge Rating system. The most common way, like always, is to kill things. However, it can easily be applied to role playing and other areas of the game.

Wizards Playtested for about a year before the game came out. And now that it has been out for two years I can say the XP system works fine, despite what you may thing.

thinking

So then a spellcaster gains no experience for casting a spell? No exp. for casting a read/write magic spell to put a new one into their spellbook?
They only gain exp. thru attacking things with spells? A cleric casts a bless on the crops helping scores of people but gets no exp. for doing so?
Hmmm....

I never use the challenge system or any other thing like that. In my game... if the bless is used to help the local farmers, you gain XP. You do NOT gain xp because you cast Bless, but you gain XP cause you helped the farmers (if that falls in your alignment and character). I give out XP for role-playing and achievements, not how many monsters you kill. If you surmount the orc horde, you get XP for that achievement, if you help the local bard's guild organize their float for the fair, you get XP for that achievement, etc... This does make it harder for the DM, but I think in the long run it makes for a much better system then just giving XP in a formulaic fashion.

No, they gain XP through the CR system. You can assign a CR to blessing crops. It would be rather low because it's easy to do unless he burns 80% of his spells on bless and blesses a 1000 acres of soy beans. In the end it's completely up to the DM to decide what rewards XP and what does not.

I suggest reading DMG pp 168 - 169, Story Awards.

100XP per spell level as an absolute is prone to vast abuse ("I'm attacking the darkness!", or, "While we wait the two months for Galdric to train and the Seers to translate the document, I cast all my spells each day - ooh, I've gone up 3 levels!"). A variable or fixed amount for spellcasting that is actually useful/worthwhile outside of a combat environment is fine.

Edit: If you want to give spellcasters XP for casting in combat, be aware the pre-existing system already assumes that spellcasters are doing just that.
