Spell-less Ranger confirmed by Mearls

I'm sure rangers will be able to do most of the stuff they used to with spells with powers instead. I think ranger will be a lot more fun to play.

Spell-less rangers is awesome news. Its nice to be able to play as an archer without all the divine caster baggage.
First, I really like the news about 4e concerning the Ranger and the ability to customize classes and to be able to run non-magic campaigns (I really want to see a martial controller). Best news I've heard about 4e (other than the Dragonborn, which I didn't like at first...)

But, I gotta ask... Why couldn't a 3.5 fighter make for tremendous non-divine archer?

Now, that I've asked that, I just want to repeat that this is really good news about 4e. It had me reconsidering (momentarily) whether or not I'd stick with 3.5 or switch to 4e.

I think the reason a non-magical ranger would be better is since well for one they are made specifically for archery, also their paragon paths would be better situated for archery.

The classless thing is pure noodling/theorizing/game tinkering on my part. It isn't something that the core game comes out and tells you how to do.
Still, it would be nice to see something like that at some point... maybe a series of DDI articles? :)

As for the ranger, I was really expecting it, since the ranger had martial as a power source, spells were unlikely.

I must confess that I have a soft spot for the nature oriented ranger idea. Maybe as a paragon path in a divine splat book...
