Spellcaster that thinks he's a rogue.

Aeson

I am the mysterious professor.
I would like to create a spellcaster that works as a rogue without multiclassing. Can it be done? Any ideas?

I know it will be a scroll and wand dependent character. Are there any feats that can help? I know of Arcane Trickster. Any other Prestige classes?

Uses spells to do roguey things. I prefer to play spellcasters. Arcane casters can hide, open doors and finds traps using spells. I wanted to find ways to do this and other rogue traits as often as a rogue could. Scrolls and wands will be expensive but should fit the bill.

In my game I'm stepping down as DM and a player is taking over. He plays a rogue and a wizard. I'm not fond of playing 2 characters and prefer spallcasters so I was trying to find a way to replace his 2 with 1 that can do the work of 2.

Make a Beguiler. All the spell-power of a sorcerer, but with a rogue-focused spell list, and all the skills of a rogue. Plus neat class features.

In some respects, a necromancer or summoner is like a guy with an army of incredibly incompetent rogues ready to "check for traps" at his beck and call.

I tried that, but my Celestial Bison kept being unable to flip the catch on the chest with his hooves! Maybe my Fiendish Gorilla will have better success! :p

Beguiler (PHBII) is completely what you are looking for - it is a spellcaster who gets up to 9th level spells, wears light armor, and has a ton of skill points (and rogue-skills). The Beguiler casts spontaneously from a set list (Int-based caster). The spell list is mostly Enchantment and Illusion with a dash of Divination, but it includes some other spells that are useful to sneaky/clever characters.

The big weakness for the Beguiler is that they have no direct damage spells (other than a few that do nonlethal damage). They do get UMD, though, so they can pick up wands if they want.
