I have been saying it for a while Hollywood is pricing themselves out of movies, they are starting to depend on DVD sales. The result, is going to be more dumb comdies (not that there is anything wrong with them).

Average cost of movie this summer was reported at 160 million.

You're kidding, right? I mean average non-matinee ticket price are now on the two-digit range. Even matinee ticket is over $6.

Besides, isn't this just the domestic (i.e., US) box office revenue? I mean, the international release of Spider-Man 2 isn't open yet, right?

So, are you saying that you expect a movie to make back it's entire budget in the opening weekend for it not to "tank"?

Not entirely sure what you're talking about, here...

Ditto.

$150-155 Million would be the all-time record for a 5 day opeining, beating the previous record of $129 Million for Shrek 2....

I imagine people are pretty happy with that take.

Kai Lord was being funny with the subject line of the thread.

IIRC US box office total only has to be about 1/3 the movie's cost in order to turn a small profit.

Part of the reason you still see so many small budget movies, though, is return on investment. If you create a $100 million movie that grosses (including global, ppv, dvd, etc.) $150 million then you've made $50 million, a lot of money to be sure. However that's a 50% improvement on your investment.

If you make a movie that cost $10 million and grosses $20 million then you've only made $10 million, but if you make 10 of those at that average gross then you've made $100 million, a 100% improvement on your investment.

Ticket prices are high and going higher but the cost of the ticket is not the only way threatres make money, food at 500% mark up!

In the top 10, the longest on the listed link is Shrek 2 at 7 weeks, then you have Harry Potter at 5 weeks, two money makers, the other movies White Chicks, Dodgeball, Garfield, 9/11, are money makers but all with cost of less than 50 million. Oh, Spider-man will break even and the only profit, DVD sales. Big screen movies do not have the life that they once had, I just see the big screen being used as marketing.

I think this is why DVD makers are trying so hard to find a limited life DVD.
