Spiked Chain + Reach

If I am a medium character with a medium sized spiked chain, I threaten 5 and 10 feet out. If someone casts Enlarge Person on me, what is my new threat range? What if I become Huge, or Collosal? What would my reach become with the spiked chain?

Hi!

If I got it right, your natural reach is doubled with a reach weapon, the spiked chain being an exception because you threaten any squares.

I.e., if you are a Medium creature your natural reach is 1 square. If you wield a glaive (reach weapon), your natural reach is doubled. You don't threaten any squares 5 feet away from you but only squares 10 feet away from you. If you wield a spiked chain (special reach weapon) you still threaten squares 5 feet away from you AND all squares within 10 feet of you.

If you become y Large creature (by means of Enlarge Person, for example), your natural reach becomes 10 feet. So, wielding a reach weapon doubles your natural reach. Attacking with a glaive prohibits you now to attack any squares from 5 to 10 feet. You only threaten squares from 15 to 20 feet away from you. If you wield a spiked chain you can still attack all squares from 5 to 20 feet away from you.

For Huge and Colossal creature repeat the process in an analogous manner.

Enjoy!

Check the back of the Dungeon Master's Guide. They have several grid templates showing exactly where you threaten. If you look at the Large(tall) diagram, you will see that your space is four squares. Your natural reach is all of the squares touching the four square and all of the squares touching those squares, including the corners. Your "reach" reach goes out even further.

I laid out that grid diagram in a word processor and printed it out for my reference. The amount of squares you threaten with a spiked chain when large is huge.

It makes sense to me that a spiked chain has no minimum range, and a maximum range of 10ft. Hence I agree that you can attack anywhere up to 20ft when enlarged.

The rules don't talk about minimum range, but it seems a bit to work that way... with a longspear you cannot attack 5ft or closer, but you can attack 10ft. If enlarged, you cannot attack 10ft or closer, but you can attack 15ft-20ft. (maybe? :p )

Ok Hypersmurf here's some threating square questions:

Large Sized Ogre Figher
using the feats Monkey Grip (Complete Warrior) & Shortened Grip (Dragon Mag 321 or 322 the one on Polearms) and a (normally medium-sized is a 10ft reach) Huge Heavy Pole Axe.

What squares do I threaten?

What about if some fool of a Mage in the party casts Enlarge on him.
Essentially he goes to Huge and the Pole Axe would goto Gargantuan then right?

I'm not familiar with shortened grip, so I can't answer that. Just wanted to point out that an ogre is an invalid target for enlarge person.

But, if there were an Enlarge Giant spell, the ogre would become Huge (15ft space) and the pole axe would become Gargantuan. The size of the pole axe only affects its damage, though, and does nothing for reach.

That's not how it's written, though :)

A spiked chain is a reach weapon, which means you can attack at 10' but not at 5'... with the special exception that the spiked chain can attack adjacent opponents (so, 5' and 20').

A Large creature with an appropriately-sized reach weapon can attack at 15' and 20', but not 5' or 10'. So with a Large spiked chain, which is a reach weapon, he can attack at 15' and 20', but not 5' or 10'... with the special exception that the spiked chain can attack adjacent opponents (so, 5', and 15'-20'). The wording of the spiked chain doesn't actually allow a Large creature with a Large spiked chain to attack opponents 10' away.

I'm fairly certain Enlarge only works on Humanoids. Ogre's are Giants.
