[Spycraft] Delta Green: Rebirth (Dead Letter)

Alex looked up at Pike. "I can check over the head, certainly. It's been a little while since I've done any surgical procedure, but I have some forensics experience. I try and keep up to date on pharmacology too, so hopefully I'll be able to turn something up." He took a look at the surroundings. "I'd prefer somewhere a little better suited than this, but I can do it here if needs be. I have some equipment in my car. If nothing else I can do the prep work before we send this to... Wherever we send things like this." Alex straightened up.
"The head has definitely been severed, it's fascinating. Very, very strange, but fascinating." He shook his head, then turned to Pike. "To answer your question, I'm a psychiatrist, and an FBI-trained profiler. I know some forensics, though I'm no expert. I've worked several serial killer cases, and help break up some cults, including a little de-programming, I've seen some fairly strange things." He waved in the direction of the head. "I've never seen anything this... Inexplicable before, though. I've seen things more disturbing, but never this... Odd." He shrugged.

Pike barks another of his short, mostly humourless laughs at Alex's words.

"By the end of this op, I can practically guarantee you'll have seen stranger things. Better get used to it - life in our organisation's never dull. Of course, running into inexplicable things so often does mean we're quite nicely set up when it comes to examining them. We'll be able to get you some time in a proper lab to study this thing. However, now is a good time to tell you about rule one - where possible, nobody does any investigating by themselves. Work in pairs or threes. Even if it's conducting scientific tests, have one person doing the testing and the other watching them. Always watch each other's backs, and be alert for any..abnormal behaviour evinced by your partner. Sure, the buddy system can slow things down a bit, and we might get more done by splitting up; but we don't have that many operatives, and that means prioritising safety over speed."

Pike pauses for a moment, tapping his chin, and then begins talking again.

"The way I see it, there're three possibilities here; either Bio-Carb animated this head and Iron Shirt stole it from them, or Iron Shirt stole whatever Bio-Carb used to animate this head from them and animated this head with it, or Iron Shirt learnt how to animate the head from watching or taking part in activities at Bio-Carb and did it himself. In the first two instances, Bio-Carb may have noticed something missing, and may be searching for it. If, in the worst case scenario, Iron Shirt stole this head from them then they may know exactly what's missing, and they'll want it back - so everybody stay sharp! Santiago! Once we arrange time in a lab, I'll send Taszyck with you to keep an eye on that head and make sure nobody makes a play for it. Gordon! You're getting together everything you can on Ms Fiona Lin-Wei. Pull records, check out back issues of this magazine of hers - full workup. Then pull what you can on Bio-Carb - but discreetly. We don't want them to know we're looking into them - not yet, anyway. You can manage that? Rose! You and I are going to interview Lin-Wei and see if she knows anything about anyone named Thomas Iron Shirt or Bio-Carb. Just hang back and let me do the talking, but keep your eyes open. Finally, nobody is to do any digging into Thomas Iron Shirt. Chances are it's an alias - I wouldn't put my real name on a package like this. If it is an alias, we'll get nothing from investigating it - and if it isn't an alias and Bio-Carb know they have a leak, looking into Iron Shirt would paint a big red target on his head. Any objections, comments, things you think I've overlooked?"

"There's another possibility. A trap. Does the organization have any enemies that would be interested in drawing out an investigation? Either way, I agree that the sender is too hot to handle.

Can we update the tracking information on the parcel to show it was delivered?

Gather Information +8; Computers +6. I'll burn an action die if I can.

Gordon:
[sblock]You and Baldwin update the shipping notice on the package.

AMALGAMATED BIO-CARB: is a publically-traded NASDAQ company, a production facility and subcontractor in the pharmaceutical and medical fields. They are known for producing anti-psychotic and anti-seizure medications. The latest drug they're attempting to patent is one meant to help revive coma patients. They are researching artificial neurotransmitters, "bridges" between severed nerve endings. They are also under contract to Nuevas Fronteras, a biotech firm based in South America.

FIONA LIN-WEI: has an entry in the FBI Criminal Database. Lin-Wei was born 8/03/77 and attended Berkeley from '95 to '98. She is labelled an ecological radical by the FBI. In 1998, she was expelled from Berkeley after a conviction for burglary, grand theft, and felony criminal mischief. She and other members of the Animal Liberation Front broke into a research laboratory and stole several monkeys used for research. She was thereafter arrested twice more for simple assault in 2001 and 2002.

OOC: It'll take you about a half hour's hunting to turn up all this information.
Dang, a critical on the Information roll!

Elzbieta:
[sblock]You cautiously tail the blond man, who is speaking on a walkie-talkie. He turns around to look back at you. He is clean-shaven and has Nordic features, very much the stereotypical German. He turns and quickly hops into an unmarked white van. OOC: Put Elzbieta's replies in a spoiler block like this, as I'd like to keep the events you see secret from everyone else. For now.[/sblock]

[sblock]Elz cautiously approaches the van, careful to keep her angle of attack nice and wide. She quickly makes note of the plate number, and attempts to move into a position where she can see into the van's interior.
OOC: Sorry about that. I'll be more careful. Does the van take off, or stay put? If there is no crowd around, Elz will pull her pistol out entirely, preparing for the worst. If people are around, she keeps the weapon drawn, but under her jacket. If the van takes off, fire at the tires.

Elzbieta:
[sblock]The van drives off. You note the license number of the vehicle, and open fire at one of its tires; the tires squeal and the van swerves and crashes into a telephone pole.[/sblock]

Pike:
[sblock]You hear an impact from the back, though you can't tell exactly what it was. You also think you may have heard a gunshot before the impact...[/sblock]

Pike gives an approving nod at Drew's words. "It's good to be wary, Gordon. Our organisation does have enemies. However...there's no way they could guarantee who would be sent on this operation, and the time and effort they'd have to expend setting this up isn't worth it just to kill or capture a random team of agents. On the other hand, some of the people who want to destroy us are insane, so there's no reason to rule anything out yet. As for the tracking information, I'm sure it can be arranged. Now, Santiago, box up that head! Drake, we'll be taking the box and note with us too, so we can perform handwriting analysis if we obtain other samples. Let's go, people. You know what to do."

Pike begins walking out of the room, leaving the others to collect up the current evidence. He takes out his cell phone and puts in a call to 'the agency.' "Pike here. We've got to the post office and -" Suddenly, Pike breaks off from his call, his head whipping round. "That was.." Switching his cell phone to his left hand and ending the call, he reaches into his coat and pulls out a handgun. "Something's wrong. Rose, Gordon, stay here and keep an eye on the evidence. Santiago, you're with me!" With that, Pike begins running, heading for the back of the building...

Alex

Alex nodded in agreement as Pike asked him to box up the head. He started to look around for a suitable container - not too difficult in a sorting office. He was abrubtly interrupted as Pike called him. His own pistol was out of it's shoulder holster before even he realised it, and his head snapped around to Pike. "On it, Pike." he replied curtly,. He followed Pike at a steady jog, keeping pace. His deep brown eyes scanned around, keeping a watchful eye for anything out of the ordinary, his pistol in a firm two-handed grip. "What was it, Pike?" he called as he followed the older agent outside.

His eyes sweeping the area as he ran, Pike replied curtly. "Gunshot. And...something else." 'Like something was struck...or fell, maybe. Looks like Tazyck wasn't just being overly cautious. You must be getting slow, Ben. Never thought I'd see the day when a rookie was more paranoid than you.'

Alex nodded briefly. "Got it, and I've got your back." Alex made sure he was moving so as to best cover Pike's blind spots, his mind going back to basic training.
