[Spycraft] Navigating ??

I think that the survival skill could be used in place of navigate. The chart on p. 65 of the Spycraft core book lists a Survivial DC of 15 to "know position and direction."

I looked at that, but based on the skill's description, it sounds more like that is used for rudimentary survival navigation, not the type of navigating that one would do if planning a military action or plotting an airplane course.

I would say it all depends on what you are trying to navigate.

You mention two examples:

Planning a military action: IMHO covered by Profession: Military or, perhaps even, Knowledge: Military. Given that the Soldier/Wheelman Class Guide puts a fair bit of emphasis on Profession: Military, I'd go with that option.

Plotting an aircraft course: covered by Pilot (again, IMHO).

That's just off the top of my head (as I don't have my books to hand).

Thoughts anyone?

Navigating is officially done with the skill used to control the vehicle- so if you're driving a car and need to figure out which highway to take, use Driver. If you're trying to choose a heading while looking down from 40,000 feet, you use Pilot. If you're navigating a river delta or plot a course across the Atlantic, you use Boating. Stumbling around in the woods on foot is Survival. There is also the Knowledge ("region") skill which provides a synergy bonus to all such checks while you're in that region, and the Explorer's 'Direction Sence' class ability provides a bonus to all check made to navigate.

Hope this helps :),

Thanks for the help, everyone. Patrick Kapera, the Spycraft brand manager over at AEG, is going to ask around if there is any one skill that does the same thing that Navigate does in d20 Modern. As soon as I hear from him I'll post the answer here.

Basically, our strategy was to NOT have a navigation skill wandering around and eatting up your skill points - instead if you have the skill to be in the situations at all (hiking throught the woods - Survival, flying a plane - Pilot) then that skill would also ensure you had the knowledge to get where you are going. Centralized bonuses that apply to all navigation types would be class abilities (or possibly a new feat), and as a last resort, you might try a education check or even an inspiration roll~ "We're totally lost here (drops action die). Which way do we need to go?"

Hope this helps,

Perhaps you could write an article on new uses of current skills, Morgenstern, and post it on the need-to-be-updated Spycraft web site.

If not, include it in the sticky FAQ thread in your new forum.
