Spycraft or D20 Modern?

Maraxle

First Post
I am interested in running a modern campaign sometime in the future.

I'm considering getting Spycraft, due to all the great things I've heard about it. However, I also see that D20 Modern is coming out. Now, should I go out and get Spycraft now, or wait for D20 Modern? I will not buy both.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Spycraft is d20 espionage. No psionics, no magic, nothing odd like that. d20 modern will be more of taking everything you have in D&D (magic, dragons, illithid, dwarves, etc) and applying modern tech to it.

I have Spycraft and it is awsome, but it really depends what you want out of a modern setting.

Why not buy both? I have Spycraft now, and I will pick up d20 Modern in November.

Then again, it's your preference. I mean if you feel the need to play a superspy campaign, give Spycraft a try. Otherwise, wait for November, when you have more than enough money to buy BOTH d20 Modern and Spycraft.

Or if you want a military-oriented campaign, pick up the Soldier/Wheelman Guide for SPYCRAFT.

If you like tweaking the rules for a military-oriented campaign, pick up Afghanistan d20. The topic may be sensitive but the content is tastefully done and informative. Plus, it's cheap ($20 retail price).

Honestly, I love Spycraft. It's a solid game and a good buy for any gaming group. But that being said, I can't comment on d20 Modern yet because I have yet to run a session of it. :)

Try the Spycraft Light rules if you don't want to spend the money just yet. You can DL them from the Spycraft website.

Well actually there are psionics and magic in Spycraft. Maybe not in the traditional way but they are present. And anything "odd" can be added with little effort.

I've personally love Spycraft since the day it was released. So many things I could point to. But in the end it depends on what type of game you're looking to run and/or play like the others have already said. I just started a campaign with a new group that had never played Spycraft before and they seemed to love it. Some days I feel like playing Spycraft more than 3rd ed. But that's a different story. I bet if you picked it up you wouldn't be disappointed.

Damn, you beat me to it. Yeah there is one of the books that is heavy on the "odd" stuff like psionics etc. I personally don't have it because I am sticking with the "silver" release stuff since it fits the style I want to play.
