Staff of the Magi

Yea the 3e Staff of the Magi does suck quite a bit. If I was running and going to introduce one I'd tweak it considerably. Bump those absurdly low DCs WAY the bleep up. I mean its a Staff of the Magi for crying out loud!

Looking at it, I think about the only way I'll be able to bump up the DC's either for a duration or permanent effect is to modify the staff with an epic level spell. Probably have to make up a specific seed for it as well and with any luck might be able to get the DC's into the low 20's or so were it might worry someone above 3rd level :)
Seems a lot of effort and xp to do it for the sake of a couple of charges, but at the moment Im on a crutch with scrolls to patch up my lack of firepower so theyre a constant trickle of xp drain anyway. If some god turns up and pesters me about modifying a minor artifact he's gunna have to answer a lot of questions about why they made such a gimp item before I snap it off in his arse :D

Maybe if we're lucky we'll get a revision in 3.5 but that wont do me any good at the moment.

Since it is a minor artifact, the DC's do seem rather low.

You could adjust it so that all the spells were Heightened to 9th level. That would raise the DC for the fireball, etc to DC 26.

Knowing how many charges you have left is actually quite simple. First you empty the staff of all it's remaing charges, then you charge it back up with your own spells. Now you know exactly how many charges there are.

No, cant do that otherwise it crumbles to dust at 0, I know how many are left in this one so its not my main concern. Think I found out with divine intervention or because I had it as a 'Signature' item back in 2E and spent proficientcy slots on it.

Most of the artifacts and what-not seem to have this same problem so its up GM's I guess to fiddle with otherwise I may as well flog it off to someone to make an epic level staffs or rods with some more destructive potential.
For the utility of the other spells its still nice, but I could hack out the same amount of scrolls for less effort and a little xp for the amount of times I use them (infrequently).
Cant remember the last time in 12years of play that I used it to absorb in combat.
Spell resistance, my own is higher and for @250k I can get an item with even higher out of the ELH.
Now to find some dirty rich newbie that would like to buy it...
"You'll be able to look real hardcore in front of all your other 15th level mates, trust me!" :D :D

I really dislike a lot of reliance on items, but being a non-min maxed generalist wizard still suffering from 2E-3E conversion I cant last very long. Basically 2 fights and Im out of spells that damage and reduced to being a 'buff bot' for the rest of the session every time we play, something I despise.

You should just keep track of what charges you use...

And ever considered summoning 1d4+1 Celestial (Dire?) Elephants (preferably about the heads of your enemies?)

But for the DCs of items: They decided to just use a simple formula, instead of checking what would be useful at certain levels. This makes people who still cast their own spells better at it than Rogues using magic devices.

You're aware of the rule about summoning creatures on a surface that can support their weight, right?

There's nothing about that in the 3E description of staffs in general, or the Staff of the Magi in particular.

I'm pretty sure wands and staves in general either loose all power when brought to zero charges, or at least they have to have at least 1 remaining to be recharged. course with a minor artifact especialy one could rule it any way you want. the 3e staff of the magi just needs an overhaul
