Knowing how many charges you have left is actually quite simple. First you empty the staff of all it's remaing charges, then you charge it back up with your own spells. Now you know exactly how many charges there are.
No, cant do that otherwise it crumbles to dust at 0, I know how many are left in this one so its not my main concern. Think I found out with divine intervention or because I had it as a 'Signature' item back in 2E and spent proficientcy slots on it.
Most of the artifacts and what-not seem to have this same problem so its up GM's I guess to fiddle with otherwise I may as well flog it off to someone to make an epic level staffs or rods with some more destructive potential.
For the utility of the other spells its still nice, but I could hack out the same amount of scrolls for less effort and a little xp for the amount of times I use them (infrequently).
Cant remember the last time in 12years of play that I used it to absorb in combat.
Spell resistance, my own is higher and for @250k I can get an item with even higher out of the ELH.
Now to find some dirty rich newbie that would like to buy it...
"You'll be able to look real hardcore in front of all your other 15th level mates, trust me!"
I really dislike a lot of reliance on items, but being a non-min maxed generalist wizard still suffering from 2E-3E conversion I cant last very long. Basically 2 fights and Im out of spells that damage and reduced to being a 'buff bot' for the rest of the session every time we play, something I despise.
