Just wanted to mention something many people seem to forget... use small shields. With a small (light now?) shield, you still have your hand free and can hold a potion or scroll. Pretty useful, my players hate it.

"Kill him faster, he's wasting our loot!"
Nod... transfer weapon to lt. shield hand (free action) get out potion (move equiv), drink (std. action), transfer weapon back to primary hand (free action)... die from AoOs (not nessarily in that order, don't start...)

Well, it's a must-have for people who don't have the perspicacity to drink their potions BEFORE combat starts.

Personally, I love the look on the player's face when the hobgoblin he's fighting sunders the potion of Cure Serious Wounds the fighter is trying to drink in the middle of combat...

Almost by definition, any item that is a "must have" is broken. :)

edit: I guess that makes backpacks and rations broken...

no. slings are broken. :D

they weigh nothing. and cost even less. every character i build has infinite slings. :D just ask Olgar. ;)

LOL!

Well, my PCs/NPCs usually start battle with a potion in their shield hand...

So, what, you drop your weapon (free action), take the potion in your now empty hand (free action if DM is generous), drink it (standard), then pick up weapon from ground (move action)?

It's not like you can drink a potion that's held in your shield hand--that shield will hit your lips well before the potion does. :)

You could go into combat with a potion clamped in your teeth... All you have to do is crunch the vial (minimal damage from broken glass) and swallow!

Better yet; put the potion in a container that dissovles when it hits stomach acid, so you can carry it around in your mouth and swallow, no crunching required.

I'll call it Tilenole's caplet of cure light wounds!
