Star Trek RPG

Tactical Combat Simulator. FASA made fantastic wargames and seriously flawed RPGs.

Shadowrun
Earthdawn
Mechwarrior
Star Trek
Doctor Who (Ok, not perfect, but still fun and a good DW resource)

While no rpg is without flaws, I think FASA made some great games.

Shadowrun is a horribly flawed mess with some absotively fantastic fluff.
Mechwarrior is completely useless as an RPG.
EarthDawn may be decent, but it died so quick I cant say.
Star Trek is average, but a weak sister to the board game.
Never saw or played Doctor Who(see Earthdawn)

you left out Crimson Skies...

Perhaps "phase" is the wrong term here. One Star Trek starship combat turn comprise of three movement phases, and so forth. At least BT had only one movement phase.

Ah.

You see, I was always trying to figure out how to incorporate mulit-phasic movement into the BT system. Its a little more realistic than getting to take all of your actions at the end of your movement.

Realistic perhaps, but bogs the game down. You might as well just play Star Fleet Battles.

I'll chime in and give another nod to choosing your favorite system and rolling your own. I'm doing it for Thousand Suns right now, and I'll end up with the exact game I want.

But if time is an issue, then I agree that LUG's Star Trek -- especially if you're going to play Next Generation -- is really nice. Somewhat unusual mechanic and chargen, but serviceable. Moreso, IMHO, than Decipher. I really like LUG's TOS book, wish they'd been able to release more supplements for that version.

However if you are looking to play TOS, I'll say that as old as it is, the FASA system is a lot of fun and feels like Trek. I really love their original approach to bridge-command based starship combat (though Tactical Combat Simulator is nice too, it just feels like stepping outside the RPG).

Almost all Trek RPG stuff is oh-so-cheap on eBay right now, you can almost afford to buy all of the best.

Wouldn't touch Prime Directive (any version) with a 10 foot pole if I wanted to play Star Trek, but that's just me saying "it don't come in 2nd here!".

I'll go out on a limb here and suggest Spirit of the Shatner... er, Century. It would take some adaptation (especially vis a vis the utter lethality of personal energy weapons) but it just seems like a good fit to me.

On a side not, I just got back from another rousing game of Federation Commander. Darn I like that game. The Tholian Heavy Cruiser is a bit of a jack of all trades, master of none though (I run a 1/2 disr 1/2 phot mix... versatile but lacks punch).

Anyway, happy gaming. Trek is good. Well, up through Wrath of Khan anyway. ;)

Can you expand on this - I only remember the FASA combat simulator game for starship combat where was the alternative described?

Many thanks!
