Star Trek: The Next Generation DVD's...

I've been thinking of buying these on DVD. However they seem fairly expensive. List price on each season is $130. Where as Buffy Season 2 was only list price at $59.98. While the Trek Seasons have between 24 and 26 episodes the Buffy Season 2 has 22 episodes. I'm just trying to figure out why there is such a large price difference. So I guess what I'm getting at are the Trek Season DVD's worth it? :)

The US Buffy DVDs are only $60 for season 2? Dang! According to Amazon UK, list price for Buffy is £80 per season (roughly $120 or so), with the exception of season 1 (£45). The price for a season of TNG seems to be £85 - a little more than Buffy.

Hmm... taking a look at Amazon US shows list prices of $60 and $40 for Buffy, and $140 for TNG. Weird. What is even weirder is that a Swedish store (www.sfbok.se) charges *much* less for a season of TNG than for a season of Buffy (roughly 1100 kr for TNG vs. 1400 kr for Buffy), with both being Region 2 and thus the UK release.

Hmm... perhaps I should place an order with Amazon US for seasons 1 and 2 of Buffy when I get money some time. 780 kr for two seasons of Buffy goodness - about half of what I'd pay for one season at sf-bokhandeln!

You may want to look on ebay instead of Amazon. I picked up Season 1 and 2 for about $80 and $90, respectively. It's still a lot of money but not as bad as $130 each.

For the non-Americans who are thinking about buying the cheaper DVD's from the US, be careful about the coding. I believe all of Amazon's DVD's are encoded for Region 1 (US and Canada only). I believe the UK is Region 2 (I could be wrong but it's definitely not Region 1). Or you can see if they're encoded for Region 0 which works everywhere.

Yeah, they're region 1-encoded, and my opinions on the region-coding system would probably make both Eric's *and* Morrus's grandmothers run away screaming (summary: me no like). However, I did find a hack on the net to make my DVD-drive region 0 which means it doesn't bother with that region crap. Of course, I haven't had the opportunity to actually *test* any DVDs since I did that...

Of course a large amount of non-US DVD players are region free.

If you want cheap, the R4 set's might be the go. Prices range from around US$44 for S1, to US$79 for S2, to US$87 for S3 & 4. Prices were even lower untill recently when the aussie dollar started to increase a bit.

As for Trek, S1 can be had for US$114...

Checkout EzyDVD . Its one Australian based DVD retailer that sells overseas.

If Star Trek TNg ever goes out of syndication for more than a year I might consider buying them. COnsidering right now I can turn the TV on to a STTNG episode (its one of the 1st season ones I can't remember the name to) I can't see ever buying these (and certainly not for the $160 CAN price tag - *GAG*!).

Now Babylon 5 on the other hand......

When I found out TNG was coming out on DVD, I sold my Columbia House VHS version on eBay for about $400. I picked up the season 1 DVD set, and will get the others as well.

The DVDs take up way less space than the videos, I'll have every episode available to watch whenever I want (no waiting for syndication), and if I need a certain piece of info, it's all there. :)

And, since I'm writing Trek short stories for the Strange New Worlds contest, it helps to have all that material available as needed for inspiration and fact-checking. :)

Now if they would only announce DS9 on DVD....
