They rebooted the Muppet Show a while back but didn't last too long.

Are you a time traveler? The reboot is a one-episode special/trial balloon airing later this year.

It's amazing that there were multiple possible ways for the sequel trilogy to have hung together and been a satisfying package, but all of these highly paid people just said "you know, I'm sure it'll all work itself out on its own."

The amazing thing is the Disney owns SW, and has (had?) no long term plan for it in terms of plot. Truly. Mind. Boggling.

I had not heard about a new special. Supposedly airing soon, I see. I might be a time traveler or an idiot we're still not sure but at least I'm not crazy....

Oh that... Yeah im not sure who was at the helm of this fun ride but its got some truly shocking decisions. I recall in the pilot episode that Kermit had left miss piggy for a younger pig. They jumped into a lot of adult pop culture hot points that we would refer to as the culture war today.

I may be misremembering but if I'm not mistaken, Disney bought Lucasfilm in spring of 2012? Then re-released Another New Hope Part 2. As bad as the prequels were, the sequels were just so forgettable. I'm not saying this to be edgy or provocative but there is little that is salvageable from any of those three movies and I remember next to nothing of them. I think I watched them all twice, the first time, then a second hoping the movies were better on a re-watch, they weren't. Just the opposite, they were worse the second time around. My brother asked me at Christmas if I'd watched Andor, which I watched 5-10 minutes and hit the eject button. Forgive me if I'm incorrect but I think in another thread it may have been @Retreater that said my opinion didn't count as I only watched 5-10 minutes, but that was enough for me to realize I wasn't interested in that show and was the point when I realized I'm not interested in Disney SW anymore. They've saturated the market in a bad way. But hey Tom Cruise got behind the camera to film a scene from Star Fighter so all the more reason to save $20. You are correct though there is no big plan for the franchise other than milk it for all its worth. I see Kathleen Kenedy stepped down so that may hold some hope. I think the best thing they could do is put the franchise on a shelf for 5-10 years.

Apparently only lasted one season so probably wasn't well thought out. Lacing adult humor into kids shows has been a thing for a long time, but it has to be done well in a blink, or you'll miss it kind of way.

We'll strongly disagree on Andor, which becomes a great show over time. But, I strongly agree the sequels are even worse on a second watch (all the fanboy hope is gone, what's left?). There are nuggets of good ideas and characters there, then they make every choice incorrectly.....every. single. choice.

I feel the same about the Acolyte. Some great ideas that they just trash the longer the show is on.

Last two shows 1 was great and the other was good imho.

I think Solo is actually my favorite Disney era Star Wars movie. Was it "necessary"? Not remotely. And yeah, I get that people found the need to explain every distinctive thing about the character with events that seemingly happened in the course of a few days obnoxious. But it was just easy, breezy, and unpretentious fun and adventure. Fun is the dimension of the classic Star Wars formula that a lot of Star Wars media really falls down on. I know a lot of people love Rogue One, and I agree it's well-made, but it's so dreary and bleak, even before all the main characters die, I just never particularly want to watch it.

I also enjoy Episodes 7 and 8, but unlike Solo they lose massive points for being stuck in a trilogy ending in far and away the worst Star Wars movie ever made.

Yeah, I’d have to agree. Solo knew the brief and while it overdid explaining where he got his kit (he’s allowed to just buy his blaster in a shop, you know) it did very well on the fun. Donald Glover really helped, as did the rest of the cast. It remains watchable and re-watchable. I loved Solo’s first job in the military, it’s so 40K it hurts.

There’s a lot of good new SW but honestly most of it is animated (Clone Wars, Tales, Rebels, Bad Batch) because the limits of aiming it at kids really help the aesthetic and Dave Filoni has entirely internalised the brief. The good live action stuff varies between the great but depressing (Rogue One, Andor) and Dave Filoni not being good at live action.

We definitely need Rogue One and Andor, especially in these troubled times - the speech from the latter on tyranny* is simply one of the best put to film on the subject ever - but we also do need some variety and some fun adventures, and Solo definitely delivered.

My personal top 5 SW live action films are:

1) RotJ (first one I saw at the cinema, it’s not perfect but it will never leave me)

2) SW (first one seen on TV and the one I’ve watched most times)

3) ESB (probably cinematically the best)

4) Solo

5) Honestly, there isn’t a 5. I’m not inclined to rewatch any others; they’re imperfect or irritating in a wide variety of different ways. However, if I have to pick one, it’s RotS, because Lucas finally delivers on his operatic vision and there’s some great tragedy, and also great fights.
