D&D 4E Star Wars Saga Edition as preview of 4e?

What a perfect cover!

"4th Ed! No! We're not working on a 4th ed. We've not spent a single minute on a 4th edition for D&D. But... you should see our new Star Wars. "

Heh. I seem to recall that D&D 3.5 was announced after SW Revised was released. It gave me the impression at the time that SW Revised was partially a test to see how receptive gamers were to the idea of a new edition of D&D. I'm getting that impression now, and I'm excited, quite honestly. :) Then again, I'm one of the unwashed that was disappointed that D&D 4 wasn't announced at D&D Experience. :heh:

I think they've been successfully using books like DMG II, PHB II, and the Magic Item Compendium to make changes for a while now. Does anyone here really think the upcoming Rules Compendium won't include revisions?

However, to be fair, they've never denied that they've been working on a 4th edition.

Personally, I hope the new Star Wars will give D20 Modern a much-needed shot in the arm.

I can't say I'd like to see this cow killed. I enjoy the sight of characters desperately rolling their saves against fireballs.

This system would be easy to switch to players-roll-all-the-dice, my very favoritest UA variant.

Oh man! The preview look so cool! I am almost as excited as when the 3e came out! And I have preordered the book already. Hope the may will come quickly

Now I am pretty sceptical about the Reflex save though. Although it is cool to combine it with AC, I am worried it will became so important everybody would try to have it at max. Well. We will see...

I like the lite and smooth look of the preview character though.

Huh? That's your reasoning? There's a fair amount of material published for the d20 Modern SRD, I hope you're aware.

Yes, I've contributed to a little of it. d20 Modern proper is obviously excluded by my statement.

I wonder, whether the Scout class has

5 + Int (*5 on first level) skill points (would be in harmony with rank +5 on first)

or

6 + Int (*4 on first level) skill points (as it was usual since now and is also mathematically possible on provided character example.

But I vote for the first variant.

Weaker character archtypes will be a powergamers delight as it will encourage and reward cherry picking of powers and abilities. This problem will grow exponentially worse as the slew of character option books are released further promoting the cherry picking and dramatically increasing the likelyhood that people will easily be able to "break" the game. I think the power creep in this kind of game will be on a scale we haven't experience yet in DnD.

So powergamers will stick with one class and cherry-pick talents/feats instead of dipping into half a dozen classes for a level or two. Doesn't that make the archetype stronger?

That's what I was thinking. That's a real help for GM. It made my M&M games go so much faster.

I don't think it's either one, since it's been said that skill points are a thing of the past. As a rough guess, I would say that the bonus for a known skill is something along the lines of:

4 + (1 * Character Level) + ability score modifier + miscellaneous modifier

I'm glad to be seeing so much love and optimism towards the new edition.

From sampling D20 Modern, I do worry about too many cues being taken from the talent tree system. Most talents were sort of flat and dull. Unfortunately, I have to say I'd use both those adjectives to describe the jedi sentinel talent tree that the preview offers.
