Stargate Atlantis Series Ending after this Season

Allow me, as someone who actually enjoyed a similar ST series to make the first comparison . . .

After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by the Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never-ending mission as the Stargate Universe crew discovers that the ship is unable to return to Earth and that they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.

The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe

Stargate: Voyager?

Yeah, I said it! :D

Hmmm...doesn't sound like the new series has much to do with a Stargate, does it? :-S

Time to start a pool: How many episodes into Stargate Universe before some form of Replicators make an appearance?

Seriously how can you name it Stargate anything without a stargate? :-S

I've not been a fan of the show. So much about it just either bores me or rubs me the wrong way that I can't really love it. There are often bits of fun dialog, so I'm not turned off completely. But I also know a show with a large audience when I see it. Atlantis has a growing audience year after year and killing the show makes no sense.

The fact that this is happening on the Sci Fi network is why I'm not surprised though. It reeks of executive budget cutting.

GOD BLAST IT ALL!

I have completely lost my faith in SciFi and after Stargate Atlantis ends I will never give another new or movie show on their network the benefit of the doubt. I'd rather Eureka died so that Stargate could live.

:] :] :] :] :]

Heck no. Eureka is original; Atlantis is standard re-tread of Stargate itself, which got old after so many seasons.

That said, there's no reason both shouldn't exist. This is just SFC screwing over popular shows because they think they can replace it with cheap garbage. It happened with Farscape, the exact same thing is happening now. It has nothing to do with the other shows. Heck, Eureka was the highest rated premiere... we'll probably be having this conversation about it too.

Also, I don't watch Eureka on SFC, I watch it on Hulu. Less support for SFC without the ethical badness of full-blown piracy.

I noticed a small blurb about Atlantis ending after this season (and continuing as at least one direct to TV movie).

I have to say I'm bummed. I enjoyed the show a lot. Not a lot of high drama but a fun show.

Yeah, sounds disappointing, but it sounds like the show was only ordered for 5 seasons or something? Besides, after about 5 or 6 seasons most shows start running out of steam fast, so it's a good run.

Honestly though, even though I like Atlantis, the characters are largely not as interesting as the ones that were on SG-1 (I'm talking pre-Carter Atlantis here, people). There's McKay...but he originated on SG-1 to begin with. McKay and Sheppard work pretty well together, but Teyla and Ronon tend to seem fairly bland.

To the producers: for the love of God, NO REPLICATORS!!! They're a bit like the Borg, but instead the Borg getting cheesier a la Voyager, the Replicators have just gotten more and more ridiculously over the top with every appearance. The bug replicators were bad enough though tolerable, but once they started with the humanform replicators it just got worse.

I'm just saying that if I had to choose one to get the Axe I would be Eureka. Not that I want Eureka to die, its just that I love Stargate more.

And I wonder if Woolsey is pulling the flack. Maybe viewership went down with him assuming command.

Is there a reason why Atlantis is ending?

Are the Atlantis writers following the same model as B5 JMS and not go over 5 seasons' worth of stories?

Have they ran out of creative juice for Atlantis that they're ready to jump gate into a new show idea?

Did SCI-FI forced the Atlantis production to shut down after this season?
