STARGATE UNIVERSE #7:Earth/Season 1/2009

Young sleeping with his ex in Telford's body just happened, and Telford got an eyeful with the mini swaps during the jumps into and out of FTL. And, of course, we see Telford at her door at the end of the episode. So, I think this one is going to be dealt with.

He got more than just an eyeful...he was effectivley raped. Before you argue, what if Chloe had reconciled with her ex and started to have sex, only to suddenly swap out with the female scientist? How would she have felt if she suddenly was in her own body, having involuntary sex with a strange man?

Chloe's decision to lose control and get drunk isn't nearly on the same scale as what Young did.

This is true, but it is also a serious issue. What if you body-swapped with somebody who was a recovering alcoholic? A devout Christian or Muslim? A pregnant woman? Just using the first example, how would a dry alcoholic feel about popping back into their body and finding themselves downing a shot?

What did happen was the kiss with Chloe. That takes the "love triangle" between Scott, Chloe, and Eli a bit further and I think we see some further development on that.

That was a fantasy he had. It had to be, else she wouldn't have given him the "you're a good friend" line. That line is the international standard for telling a guy "I like to hang with you, but I'm not into you in a romantic way."

Eli's pining for Chloe has nothing to do with being the newbie. It has to do with never having had a serious relationship and not knowing how to act with somebody who isn't interested in him but is still nice to him. He doesn't even really know her that well.

No, it really happened. It's a fantasy come true for Eli, although the fact that A) Chloe was drunk, and B) he was in a hot guy's body, and C) she likely doesn't even remember she did that, takes away pretty much the "awesomeness" of the moment and in fact makes it worse than if it never happened.

Watch it again, just around the 31 minute mark on Hulu. Chloe is crying because her "best friend" is obviously banging her ex, and she feels pretty useless. Eli tells her that no hot girl was ever interested in him (because pretty girls love guys who lack confidence, right?), and she tells him that he's "cute" in real life. They start to kiss, and then there is a jump cut where she's looking at him and saying "What?" He imagined them kissing and must have been looking at her funny.

Or, it could just be bad editing that is worse than any other editing seen to date. More likely, she's self-obsessed and making a token effort to make him feel better, while he's crushing on her big time and hoping for sparks that just are not there.

Keep in mind that while we didn't see these issues fully explored in this episode, we just might as the series progresses. I guess that's where my off-hand comment about wrapping things up nicely with a bow comes from . . . in "classic" Stargate we usually didn't deal with thorny ethical issues like we see here, and when we did, they usually got "wrapped up" in one episode.

I agree, there may be some long-term arc planning going on here, we'll have to see with more episodes.

This show has an obviously different tone and writing style, part of which is that the story is taking it's time to move along. Some hate this, I love it!

With Telford usurping Young's command more than once, Young and Telford obviously have a history. Heck, it seems Telford has a history with several folks on Destiny! Also, Telford outranks Young (I'm pretty sure) and is acting either on direct orders or at least with implicit consent from the Pentagon.

I'm also getting the impression that Telford's the kind of officer that lets power go to his head. He gives an order and expects to be obeyed. The problem here is that ot everyone on Destiny is military, and won't necessarily respond well to it. We've already seen some of the scientists won't, and Rush certainly won't.

Eli, well Eli didn't really do anything wrong with his borrowed body. So he ate some food . . . so what?

Depends on whether or not the body's owner is diabetic. Though I can't really blame him, he's been stuck on that ship with nothing but instant gruel to eat, and how many of us would jump at the chance to taste anything else for a change? (Reminds me of the SG-1 episode where O'Neil is stuck in the time loop and enjoys a huge bowl of oatmeal when he finally gets out.) Of course, the food might not even taste the same to him because he's using the other guy's taste buds.

When I saw the pilot, I was overjoyed that here was a show where the pudgy geek gets the girl. Then, I was pretty upset when Chloe got together with the handsome soldier guy.

But, you know... when I think about it, Scott's something of a man-slut, and Chloe's too immature. I think now I would rather see Eli and Lt. James get together.

I like James. I think a normal woman in her position would be angry that some other woman has replaced her with the man that, just a few days ago, she was having sex with in the broom closet. But, no. She actually seems to feel pity for Chloe, as if she knows that Scott's just going to hurt her, and she can't really say anything about it.

I'm not really worried about anyone eating or drinking something that their "host" might be allergic too.

I mean, come on, think about it . . . whoever the brass pick to be your "host", if they have any serious allergies that you could inadvertently trigger, they'd tell you about it.

"Welcome home to Earth Eli. While you're here in Sgt. Central Casting's body, be aware he has a severe allergy to peanuts. Go have fun!"

Farscape had fun with the switching bodies. ;)

These people knew what they were getting into when they said okay to the using the stones. I thought they were tame on it. Put my money that Telford and Young's wife already have a story.

Come on, do you really think they'd let Chloe and Eli get together in the first few episodes of a brand new show if they were "meant for each other"? It's in the TV show cookbook that every show needs two characters who are fated to be together but just never get there until the very end of the series, or who get together and break up repeatedly.

If anything, Chloe's relationship with Scott convinced me that the show has destined her for Eli. She's certainty not destined for Scott if she hooked up with him in the first three episodes of the show.

Eli is likable enough that I predict he will end up with Chloe at some point. It seems inevitable to me. He just has to work to get there.

True. It's almost like rats as the standard monster group you first have to encounter in a CRPG. :p

I wouldn't mind some diversions from the usual stuff, though. Have the pair get together and then sort it out. Kinda like Coupling.

But it doesn't necessarily have to be Stargate: Universe that does this. I suppose they are already diverting from enough Stargate tropes to make it work.

I actually like this sort of trope if they don't push it out too long (which almost always happens, unfortunately). A lot of the time when a pair get together right away on TV and "try to sort it out afterward" I end up with a feeling like, "Why are these guys together after all? They've obviously got problems. They should just bite the bullet and break up."
