Starlancer being very uncooperative!

Okay, I've had Starlancer for a while now, and I've never been able to play anything past the second mission. I'm lucky if I can get two minutes into it without the whole thing just crashing to desktop. So...does anyone know what could be the cause of this?

All of my drivers are up to date, and I'm using XP although I don't have service pack 1 or 2. I don't trust Microsoft enough to download those things.

Hmm I wont state the obvious about background applications, drivers etc..Are you using a joystick or gamepad?

Also if I remember correctly (and from re reading some reviews online) Starlancer was prone to crashing. You may check for the latest patch. Or maybe a fan site has a homemade patch if MS no longer supports it. /shrug.

Given that Starlancer is relatively old, and pre windows xp, it may not be too comaptible with the more NT based XP. And unfortuantely many games didnt make the jump too well to xp. Sad but true.

I dont know what your system specs are, but you may try Freelancer-more recent and a pretty good game.

I've got and finished Freelancer. A bit disappointing, IMO.

I use a Saitek X45, a nice piece of hardware.

I don't see why it shouldn't work. I can play Freespace 1&2 with no problem, and they came out before Starlancer. Can't find a single patch anywhere.

Hmm I really dont know. My only other suggestion would be to try it in Win 98 compatibility mode. It is odd there is no patch.. but then again it was published by Microsoft...

Probably 90% of games made before xp work and well. A few arent as compatible and a tiny bit just wont work. And like I said before StarLancer was a bit buggy (I never finished it myself), so that may be an issue too. Quite possibly it doesnt like the newer versions of direct x. Perplexing, but a poorly coded game could have problems.

Freelancer was sort of ho hum too, I agree :)

Youve probably seen it but you may want to ask around at this Freelancer/Starlancer fansite..their forums still seem to be active.

If youre really ambitious, you could put in a second harddrive running win 98 for classic gaming fun :)

I HIGHLY suggest you get service pack 1 and 2. Service pack one fixed alot of issues XP had running games. SP2 fixes alot of other stuff, and added another firewall. I never had any problems with them.
The other thing is running the game in comapabilty mode. Starlancer is and older game, for win 98 I think.

I've got 3 hard drives on my comp. 1 entirely for system programs, 1 for gaming which has double the speed and storage space of the others, and 1 for storage, downloads, etc. Adding another would be no problem, I think. I've got loads of old games I want to play, but XP is EVIL.

Well, after installing every available update for XP, turning off all advanced graphical and audio options and running in 640x480, I finally finshed mission 2. :D

Yaysies!

 B-b-but Freelancer has so much good content that would make it a great candidate for a sequel! Damn Microsoft for making Digital Anvil finish early!

Really, I love Freelancer, at least until I max out, hehehe... I want to see a new story, through I'd prefer Freelancer 2 didn't involve the Nomads...

There is no need to download both Service Packs. Everything in SP1 is in SP2.
