D&D 5E starter set at Walmart

In Worcester, UK, we suddenly have not one but TWO FLGS's, and this after a ten year drought. Both stores have stacks of Starter Sets, and three or four each of the core. It made me very happy to be able to buy a PHB over the counter.

What a coincidence, I just noticed earlier today that they carry D&D on their website and evidently have for a while based on the product selection.

I saw a starter box at Target yesterday in Lexington, Kentucky.
I got my first D&D book from a Target. I begged my stepmother to buy it for me until she finally relented. It had to have been early 80s because it was the 1st edition Monster Manual with the wrap around David Sutherland art. I didn't even know what D&D was at the time, but as I browsed thorough the book I saw that it had mythological monsters. Eventually after reading it a few times I figured out that it was for a game. I asked for & received the Moldavy red box on my following birthday, so this must have been around 82-83.

(im in MS so wal-mart is as plentiful as churches and I don't mean churches chicken, I mean our town is small and we have two Wal-marts, but I digress).
But are they as plentiful as Waffle Houses? When I was stationed in Biloxi it seemed like there was one at every intersection.

I got my old red box out of the Sears mail order catalog.
More from the Retroist.
That reminds me of when I was in elementary school & I'd look at the Sears, Best Products, Service Merchandise & J.C. Penny holiday catalogs to see all the toys I wanted. Thanks for the memories.

Most of the major chain bookstores carried more than just the boxed basics; Borders, B. Dalton, Waldenbooks, Barnes & Noble all carried both the BECMI boxes and the 2E hardcovers.
I remember buying 1st Edition hardcovers & dice at the local mall B. Dalton & Waldenbooks back in the mid to late 80s.

As an addendum, to those who think that the current course of action of WotC/Hasbro to focus more on licensing the D&D IP than on the development of an ample amount of support for the TTRPG is wise, how many of you recall the early 80s? While D&D was licensed to a great many things (Intellivision video games, LJN action figures, monsters & play sets, stickers, Shrinky Dinks, Colorforms, coloring books, electronic games, a Saturday morning cartoon, etc...), TSR still published an ample amount of support product for the TTRPG. Adventures of various lengths were in abundance. The Holy Grail of pinning one's hope upon a successful AAA movie I feel is nothing more than a mirage. I'd be very surprised if a quality official D&D movie was released in my lifetime, despite the fact that I'm far from a senior citizen. I feel the possibility of a video game that has the high quality & lasting staying power of a Baldur's Gate is much more likely, though the more I've learned about Sword Coast Legends the less likely I feel that it will qualify as such. I didn't mean to go so far off topic here, but looking at the old pictures reminded me of how prolific D&D was in the early 80s.

Mmm. That box wasn't Thunderift; if I remember correctly it was basically Dragonlance without being Dragonlance. I could easily be wrong though, but that box is how I started.

I still have it, the map in it is definitely a toned down version of Thunder rift, though it doesn't mention it. Has all the normal landmarks.
