Starting Equipment for Higher Level Characters

I can't find anything in the PHB or DMG that identifies what a higher level character might start with regarding his gold and magic items.... is there such a section?

One magic item +1 level, one at equal level, one at -1 level, and enough money to buy one item equal to your level -1 .

Cheers

EDIT: page 143 DMG

Cool thanks. I didn't see this anywhere... is it in the PHB?

...weird. Am I mistaken, or is this quite different to how the treasure parcel system works? Groups find magic items that are between +1 and +5 of their current level. It seems odd to me that higher level characters are limited to lvl +1 and only 4 items.

Any opinions?

I think this is a good solution. You will have ok stuff, but it is very likely that the things you find will be improvements right from the start.

It seems balanced. You'll be choosing items that perfectly match your desires, while the characters who earned their way to your level will have items that they obtained more organically, finding some they liked, and selling or disenchanting others they didn't.

For an effort at balancing something deterministic and mathematical (character creation) with something fluid and organic (leveled up characters), it doesn't seem broken.

You aren't limited to 4 items.
you get 3 items + gold equal to an item of your level (Hence this gold can be spend on multiple lower items.. - usually with the added 40-50% cost?)

That's for a party of five characters. So that list of loot doesn't all go to one guy, it gets spread around. If you look at the bit right before the parcel system, about different party sizes, it's pretty close to the parcel system's results for just one character in the party.
