Starting Hit Points

The Beta rules had several options that gave starting characters more hit points. Looks like these didn't make into the Core Rule book.

I thought giving 1st level characters more hit points was a good idea. It doesn't seem like it would unbalance a higher level game.

If I thought it would imbalance the game at higher level (and I don't) I'd start characters with the hit points of a third level character but they wou'dn't gain any more hit points till fourth level for example.

From the discussion in the Beta rules, it sounded like the authors liked the idea of starting with more hits. I'm wondering why this was taken out. There seems to be no mention in the Core Rules, it's not even offered as an optional rule.

The main reason we went back to the normal method of maximum HP at 1st level was, if I remember correctly, due to relatively overwhelming playtest feedback. We don't mention the other methods in the Core Rules at all (along with any of the other rules that were discarded from the beta) because the RPG itself replaces the beta and shouldn't continue to reference it at all.

All that said, feel free to keep using the hp method from the beta you liked the best; if one of those works for your group, use it! :)

Yeah, I was a little disappointed that the different options for starting hit points weren't included. I still use the max hp + CON score for starting hp and will continue to do so.

Wow. That one kind of took me by surprise, but the final version does stand as it does. I would have thought that there would have been a hp bump in the final version too, but I was surprised to see it taken out.

For our Beta play (which we're still doing as we take the time to read the final), we just did double hp and double Con at first level.
