Aragorn says, in The Two Towers, tending Sam's wounds from Moria:

surely this was accidental...?

LOTR characters simply do not translate properly into D&D. D&D proceeds upon basic assumptions that the trilogy, et. al. just do not adapt well to. Gandalf is a wizard; a spellcaster. Outside the entrance to Moria he is trying to figure out the words for opening the doors. He boasts that he "once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves or Men or Orcs, that was ever used for such a purpose. I can still remember ten score of them without searching in my mind." That's 200 spells off the top of his head - JUST FOR OPENING DOORS - and he knows a LOT more. The magic systems are thus demonstrably, and UTTERLY incompatible.

do remember that the spells in the phb are only the basic spells, there might be 100s or 1000s of more spells in any give world, and it's still the same rule system.

and speaking of opening the doors to moria:
lets say the door was enchanted to a level that gandolf could do nothing to open it, who's to say the walls are enchanted as well? why not blow your way through the wall? and better yet, if you can't find out the password, why not blow the door away?

(that of course has nothing to do with lotr, it just reminded me of the password-needed lockd doors in the D&D game i play :p )

enough with lotr kish!

anyone have an idea how to stat up a creature like rayman? (the one in my avetar)
or anyone interested in filling up a character sheet for obi-wan from star wars? (using D&D rules only, not the star wars rpg)

In the movie, this scene was moved to Fellowship. In the books, the Two Towers. I looked it up when I wrote.
