Stats on Greatspear

Jack99

Adventurer
Greetings,

I cant seem to recall where the Greatspear is located. So if someone could tell me which book it is in, or type out the stats (threat range mostly; I am fairly certain it is 2d6 base damage), It would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Complete Warrior, pg. 154

The range increment is 10.

But frankly a two-handed weapon that does 2d6 (you were correct) shouldn't really have a ranged option. It would be about as aerodynamic as throwing a greatsword...

Thanks mate. And I agree on the ranged option. I needed it for a NPC race of surfaceliving wild dark elves (barbarian and rangers) who use this weapon (had a sudden vision of an indian/darkelf charging with such a spear) but I couldnt recall where i had seen it.

It does lose the set Vs. charge option.

It is an exotic weapon, so it needs something to differentiate it from the greatsword stats. And in a world where griffons and dragons can fly without magic, chucking a greatspear shouldn't be that big a deal.

Additionally, it's not that much better as thrown weapon than an improvised weapon with that puny range increment.

I would agree with you if griffons and dragons could be found flying over New England. But they can't of course. But you CAN find spears with large blades in the real world. So such an item should behave as it does in the real world. And in the real world you don't go throwing such a spear. You use it a lot like a two-handed sword... but can set it for a charge. Perhaps it is poorly categorized as an Exotic weapon...?

Again: 10ft range increment...

Some people can throw tables that far. And I do can imagine that a greatspear in real life an be thrown better than a table.

I think what bothers me is that the game writers seem to think that the greatspear was *designed* to be thrown. Of course you can throw the thing. As you point out, you can toss a table. But a table isn't *designed* to be thrown. Neither is a greatspear...

Given that the game writers designed the greatspear, I imagine what they think they designed it to do is, in fact, what they designed it to do.

Much as they did with the spiked chain.
