Stealthy Fighter

Hey once again,
Another question. For the campaign im currently working on, I need a class (PrC which is stealhy but also warrior like. It needs to be able to take hits, with decent hit dice. Think of is as a fighter class that could fit in a assassin guild. Anyone any suggestions?

Does it need to be a PrC? A Ranger is a sneaky fighter after all. Horizon Walker is the basic Ranger PrC. There are some variant classes which might also fit your requirements - Thugs, Martial Rogues, Urban Rangers.

Fighter/Rogue?

Barbarian/Rogue?

Both of those combinations will give you skills and decent melee ability. And while you're at it, why couldn't a straight fighter get along just fine in an assassins guild? All he needs to do is be willing to kill people for money, right?

While we're on the subject of the Bo9S, there's a PrC there called the Ruby Knight Vindicator. It's based off a cleric/crusader multiclass, but they get to counteract the armour check penalties to the Hide skill. I'm not familiar with the details of their religion, but they follow some dark god from Greyhawk.

What books are allowed?

Pretty much every decent book, sword sage is allowed.

So yeah, I have been checking that book, it has some nice classes. Sword Sage with the shadow hand discipline is probably the best way to go. I'll check the Rub Knight Vindicator out aswell.

I personally see assassins as stealthy killers. Who are adeps at killing without being seen, doing so with specialized skills. Thats not what a fighter is.

The Ghostwalker and Bloodhound prestige classes fit the bill, at least to some extent. I don't know if/where they may've been reprinted in 3.5. Ghostwalker originated in 3.0 Sword & Fist, and Bloodhound in 3.0 Masters of the Wild, so if they were reprinted, it's probably in Complete Warrior or Complete Adventurer. Both are tough, full-base-attack-bonus prestige classes that are kinda sneaky. They don't get sneak attack or death attack, though.

The Soulknife base class in Expanded Psionics Handbook also fits the bill, though it's kind of underpowered and not so good for multiclassing (their mind blade will never improve beyond its initial cruddy state unless they advance in Soulknife levels, and most of their class features revolve around the mind blade). It's basically a tough, psionic assassin-type, who has no psionic powers but focuses their psionic abilities toward striking effectively with their mind-blade (but they have only 3/4 base attack, and their mind blade advances slowly, so they kinda suck).

Other than that, I can only recommend the Ruby Knight Vindicator, which you already know about. I'd suggest that you start with a multiclass swordsage/warblade, taking an occasional level of warblade to bolster your hit points and Fortitude saves; probably focus on learning a few Diamond Mind and Tiger Claw maneuvers/stances from the warblade levels, while the swordsage levels would get you Shadow Hand, Diamond Mind, and Desert Wind maneuvers that may help.

(for the guy who couldn't remember: RKV is a prestige class for followers of Wee Jas, the Sueloise goddess of death and magic; who's also in the little core pantheon of the Player's Handbook)

The Ranger is plenty sneaky with a full BAB and d8 HD. He can even qualify for the Assassin PrC with no great difficulty (drop cross class ranks on Disguise). Favored Enemy works fine for an "assassin" character, so does the ability to track your target.

Should be everything you need right there.

RangerX/Scout3 with Swift Hunter heading for Greater Manyshot with Improved Skirmish. d8 HD, BAB +19, evasion, ranger spells, able to critical/skirmish undead and constructs, full Favored enemy, Fast Movement (or a climb speed, very useful), skills like hell, high touch and normal AC, trapfinding, good saves and you'll be using every skill trick you can get your hands at.

Did I mention +28d6 skirmish damage every round?

*shrug* It's all in how you build it.
