Stephen Brust writes Firefly "fanfic"

Can a professional, published author write fanfic? Apparently, because Stephen Brust has written a Firefly novel. You can download it here.

I haven't read it yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Since Fox or whoever owns the rights to publish Firefly fiction has no interest in Brust's story...yeah, I guess it's fan fic.

The fact that a phenomenal author like Stephen Brust could walk up to Fox with a completed manuscript and they apparently have no interest just boggles the mind. Judging by the way Fox has handled their Sci Fi properties in the past, if they decide to actually sell a Firefly novel it'll be written by some hack who's never even bothered to watch the show.

We could wait for Joss to write one, but at his pace we'll probably all be long dead before it's more than half finished.

I haven't seen anything about him submitting it through official channels. The discussion (here) and the acknowledgment in the document seem to imply it was just done because he wanted to do it.

Hm. Time for me to read up on the Creative Commons. I'd only seen it used for completely original works before, not for those based on someone else's IP.

He did submit it, many many months ago as I recall from his blog. I can't recall exactly what happened but he either got no response or was shot down.

That's a shame, because you can't make derivative works. But this is already more than you could wish for ;-)

Uhmmm. I don't meant to sound a little crass - but didn't Stephen Brust die last fall?

OOPs: IGNORE ABOVE

He has a horrendous infection and no medical insurance. I recalled it was life threatening (it is) but he is still alive. My bad.
