Storminator's periodic description of pain

Storminator

First Post
We got our once a month game in today. We're trying to save the local mines from whatever has organized the goblins and led them to a complete take over of the silver mines.

We started our adventuring career in this mining area - we beat up some goblins and headed for the bright lights of the big city! Turns out ignoring the source of the original goblin problem made things worse. And so we've returned.

While the local militia confronts the massed goblin hordes, we're off to decapitate the snake.

Last adventure we freed a bunch of captive miners, and they told us that one of the mines was never, ever worked. We took that to mean that's where the big boss was hatching his secret plans. Wrong. It's where the grabby, dissolve-you, lurker monsters live! Woot! The party moves off in all directions, so we're all isolated, grabbed, engulfed, blinded, immobilized and taking acid damage... ok, so maybe not everyone had every condition on them, but it was a nasty damaging condition fest. But we triumphed!

And decided that we picked the wrong mines and went back to get the 3rd mine (why is they're always in the last place you look?!). We stealthed our way in - a rare occurrence for our group. We discovered that just beyond that curtain there are goblins... and we charged in. Thrrak, my dwarf got a rare good initiative and ignored the front line of guys to charge into the middle ranks. Turns out there's some kind of hobgoblin commander there with a "all allies shift 3" power, and the goblins completely surrounded me. I don't think I've ever seen all 8 surrounding squares filled before. ;) We had been joking that today was going to be the day our sorcerer went an entire day without getting one of us in his AoE... yeah, we were wrong. I got mass attacked, dragon breathed, and sorcerered. Dropped me right to zero in the middle of the enemy. Well, the fight swirled around a bit, and our Warlord popped me back up and we ended up clearing the room.

Our avenger player didn't make it, so our rogue player played both strikers... wow. Avenger goes in and draws guys out... into flanking with the rogue, who kill-steals his oath target. In fact, the rogue killed 6 oath targets today, and if the sorcerer hadn't kill-stealed the kill-steal, it would have been 7.

So in the short rest after the fight, the rest of the gobbos come running in. With a bear and some fly-bying shadowbats. We're fighting and I wander in front of the hallway all the gobs came from - "make a perception check!" "I get a 6!" "That's combat advantage!" Twang goes the crossbow... hits and drops me to -2... Twang goes the 2nd crossbow... crit! -18 and no more healing surges here we come!

Our fighter uses a magic item (belt of sacrifice?) to grant me another surge, our warlord pops me up again... I'm getting tired of see that elf face when I wake up... I helped a little bit with the mopping up, and then it was time to run! We knew we hadn't found the big bad, we were all out of dailies, 3 PCs with no surges, and we're in the middle of nowhere surrounded by the goblin army.

We head back to the Slime Cave (tm) for the extended rest. Our eladrin warlord took watch and killed the 2 lonely goblins that got sent in to find us. We were unmolested for the rest of the night.

Next session we head back to the main mine complex to see if we can finish this quest off before it does the same to us.

Notables: Thrrak actually made a plan (it wasn't much - maybe we leaders should stay in the middle so we can help everybody - but it's a start!), our eladrin used flowery descriptions during his detect magic checks, our sorcerer went an entire encounter without AoEing a party member - not the whole session, but one encounter. Baby steps!
