How long until Scotty or some others join the crew (in canon, which I don't care about, but am curious)? Will we slowly see those characters take over in the coming 3 years?

It's not uncommon for a commanding officer to bring in his own senior crew, and we do know that they get to choose their First Officer, so they might not arrive until Kirk takes over.

M'Benga is actually in some episodes of TOS. He works in sickbay still, but McCoy is CMO not him. I'm curious how that happens--how does he get demoted?

Illegal use of combat drugs, fighting, breach of Star Fleet regulations with respect to use of the transporters....

I thought he was an odd choice for Chief Medical Officer, but was happy to see the character.
