How long until Scotty or some others join the crew (in canon, which I don't care about, but am curious)? Will we slowly see those characters take over in the coming 3 years?
I hope not.

I'm not the biggest fan of the name dropping nostalgia. Sure it's "cool" to pick a random famous or known name and then drop in a character and say "oh look it's them".

But it's not.

Sure you can go on forever on how "people change over time".......but if your showing us a younger "version of the character", then it's not really the character. With just Spock alone they have added a massive lore dumb of stuff....well, that just "does not exist". So everything they might do with "young Spock" is great...but it has nothing to do with the older "real" Spock. And it does not matter....they can't even "really" do anything....because Spock is officially like X and has the future history of X. So sure they can write a whole story where Spock meets a Vulcan guy, gets married and has twelve kids......but then they also have to "erase that from history" so it never gets mentioned...as it DOES never get mentioned.

And you get the weird things like Uhura "loves" her SNW crew........but totally dumps them in a couple years and utterly forgets about them and becomes part of Kirk's Crew and never looks back. And it's just odd that if Uhura "loves" Pike so much as the Greatest Captain Ever.....wonder why see did not go see him in the Menagerie episode? Not even a ten second "Captain Pike, good to see you again sir". But that did not happen.

I would much more like to see new original characters.

That wasn't my question....we KNOW these other characters come in.....I was asking when they do that in cannon.

I 100% would prefer new stories and characters, but that wasn't the question.

Same here. With Spock they already have a human sister that no one knew about, to go with his "insane" emotional brother that TOS never talked about. Now we have a Chapel who knows about T'Pring, completely invalidating her "later" reaction in TOS to hearing about Spock's wife. If this show was as bad as I feel "Discovery" is, I'd be flipping out.As I feel it's a genuinely good crack at doing a TOS style show, I'm trying to hand-wave as much of this as possible.

I don't think there's any canon as to who arrives when, so they get to play a little fast and loose with it. Uhura will have been promoted at least twice before TOS begins and may well have served elsewhere by then. I was wondering if we might at some point see the Enterprise rescue the Farragut, after its encounter with the cloud creature, but in the current timeline that's supposed to have happened 2 years prior. I wonder if the writers are actually consulting a timeline?

I'm ok if they don't, but I know others care a lot.....I'm hoping we keep these characters for the next few years, I like most of them.

What you're asking for is a different show.

I don't worry too much about cannon, as long as the characters and stories are good. Cannon, after all, is actually a relatively recent concern. If you look back at myth and legend, things changed. A character could be dead, then alive again, without too much care about timelines.

TOS was decades ago now. Sticking to cannon would stifle what could be done in SNW, and I really like SNW. So for me, I'm more interested in the show getting the Star Trek feel, rather than fretting about Spock and Chapel, or why M'benga lost his position as head of sickbay.

I understand some of the new lore that does not mesh exactly flush with established canon, but I can accept it when it is done well. Some more subtle aspects of the new elements might bear out in the long run. For example, I think the ending of "A Quality of Mercy" last season gives a richer meaning to (and more plausible reason for) Spock's risking his career for Pike during "The Menagerie" -- Spock knows that Pike accepted his fate to spare Spock a similar fate, as well as protect the Federation from a devastating, brutal war with the Romulans.

Holy crap that latest episode was great. I am really happy they dropped the daughter storyline for Mbenga and went with this, its such a better storyline and I felt the actor really got to flex in this episode.

Now clearly something weird is going on with the medical bay, is there something that its alluding to I should know if I was "really paying attention?" Or is it just foreshadowing something that hasn't been revealed yet.
