Strength based monks?

Right. This is why I equate Flurry and TWF. The flurry attack would mean that the attacker was using the quarterstaff as a double weapon. This is, of course, a house rule.

With 16s in str, con, wis and 12 in dex, you're up to 34 points already; not exactly doable in a 28 point buy game (which is what alot of people play in), or even a 32 point buy. And given that you don't exactly get to cherry pick stats if you roll them randomly, I'd suggest its the extreme minority of games where such stats are viable.

Unless you meant before stat increasing items, of course. But then the stats you quoted as horrible are only 3 +2 items away from being what you want.
Or you take a race with str bonus such as half-orc. Dwarf might work as well. Gnome would do but is suboptimal.

Actually, I've seen quite some effective half-orc monks in point buy 28 or 32 games.

Strength-based monk with the Dragon Descendant PrC = lots of fun. Fly into battle, charging the wizard (doing double damage), then trip him and beat him while he's down. If you get surrounded, make a full withdrawal . . . straight up into the air at a monk's speed . . . and then start again.

I typically have a cleric cast air-walk on monks during adventures. Of course: the jump skill for monks tends to be extremely high anyway.

Sorry for the Thread Necro.

My 12th level Vow of Poverty Monk has no problems without fly. Leap of the Heavens means he can, on average, jump 40 feet straight up, if he so chooses. Abundant Step has gotten me safely to the ground after more than one aerial combat as well.

Helps that our archer can do about 100 points of damage a round. Our cleric stopped memorizing Air Walk. We didn't need it.

My dude also has a 10 STR. STR is a dump stat for me, everything goes into Wis. Intuitive attack FTW! Don't have to worry about extra damage, I'm already doing a base of 3d6 per attack, with an extra 5d6 if I turn on my fiery fists and I'm fighting something chaotic evil.

IMMHO Flurry=TWF, so why bother with the quarterstaff? Power Attack can apply to your fists.

Arent unarmed attacks always considered as light weapons? meaning you cant PA with them?

Either way, if you are playing a STR-based monk, you should consider making a dwarf and then snatching 2 levels of Stone Warden as soon as you can. Adds your CON to AC instead of DEX

From the special section under the description for Power Attack in the SRD (my emphasis):
You can’t add the bonus from Power Attack to the damage dealt with a light weapon (except with unarmed strikes or natural weapon attacks), even though the penalty on attack rolls still applies.

I just played a short game of EtCR, and a buddy of mine made a goliath monk with improved natural attack... went grapple route and was a beast! Only lost 1 level to his race and Powerful Build made the day. He had lots of fun with him.

I would love to see a STR based monk (or more properly, a martial artist style) modeled after SUMO style; that is, as if the SUMO fighting style evolved outside of competition circles... something that could be used in an OA setting.

Anyone see anything like that?

INA doesnt affect monks unarmed attacks according to RAW.
