Stuff I want (From you 3pp People)

This is exactly what I'm hoping to pull off.

Well, to be honest, I'm writing what I need to write to be happy while writing it. I'm hoping to pull off the above so some actual money comes my way as a result. :)

Right on- if it's cool enough I'll bite. :)

In the meantime, if you can write some of the "boring" stuff I really want/need right now, you might have some extra spending cash while you work on the masterpiece. :D

What's funny is that you think this stuff would be interesting to write. All this stuff is boring.

I find this to be an odd response.

As a business man, I have to agree with 5E. I have been looking at 4e as a massive untapped market, but I simply do not know how to tap it. I have some ideas about Traveller, and have some inclinations with Pathfinder, but D&D 4E has been a great mystery to me.

This thread has helped me to wrap my brain around the situation alot. Thank you everyone. I have not signed the GSL (yet) and I will need to read over some stuff before doing so. But I think it is safe to say that I can have a test product or two out before summer.

Again thank you everyone.

Also, I've asked this elsewhere and haven't read a response to it, has the 4E SRD been kept up to date for those who might be interested in creating GSL 3PP stuff?
Material from the second wave of core rule books was added. Unfortunately, it was limited to the updated material that was originally open under the OGL (so no invokers, avengers, shamans, etc. from PHB2 for example). I'm nervous about the 3rd wave of core books now that The Rouse is gone. Hopefully it will at least do the same and include psions, monks, and other originally open material (actually, I would love it included more, but I'll survive).

How many 3PP writing 4E stuff (setting aside generic stuff like dungeon tiles) still exist? Who do you buy new stuff from now?
The only third party stuff I've picked up have been the Counter Collections for H1-3, and P1-2. (and, when I need them, for the rest.) They are frankly invaluable, and I consider them among the best bang-for-buck gaming purchases I've made.

It's one of those lacunae that WotC hasn't filled adequately - a cheap way to represent monsters on the battlefield. It's doubly good because I usually have enough of everything I need.

Agreed. This really irks me because (short of me not understanding the GSL) if I want to say "Bob is a warden" and no more than that, I can't do it. Not in a product at least. I'm really not sure why they wouldn't at minimum, drop the race and class names into the SRD so people could at least reference them.

LOL thanks :)

Frankly, I want to write for a living. That's not happening writing gaming material. Heck, it may never happen. But if I was at least writing a novel I'd have a debatable shot at it. Problem is, my current project is boring a hole in my mind. The proverbial pen has to hit the proverbial paper and get it out before my noggin' is even willing to contemplate doing something else.

The short version: If I'm writing anything right now, it's my big project :p

I
First off, I DON'T want stuff that competes with WoTC. I don't want new races, new powers, new classes, new magic items etc... I don't need it, because 1. it won't be easy to use it with the CB, and 2. I don't know how well it will mesh with WoTC's future releases. While you might have gone out of your way to make sure it works well with what's out there, and doesn't create any problems, WoTC most assuredly is NOT taking your stuff into account when it releases its next product.

I also want things like cities, and campaign worlds and kingdoms, but I DON'T want a lot of new classes, powers, paragon paths, and epic destinies... I want fluff, and descriptions, and at best I want to know how the existing classes and such fit within the city. If you decide to outfit the thieves guild in your city with an entirely new paragon path though... It's probably going to get ignored. (I even tended to do this in 3e as well. We played in the scarred lands setting, but almost never used the scarred lands crunch.)

No offense, but if you dont want new powers, classes or the like, but want settings, there are already a ton of them out there from 3.x and now a pathfinder setting.

There really is no need to do a 4e specific one, if folks dont want the associated classes, powers and items like in 3.x.

They've already been done.

Based on what kenmarable has posted, it would seem that any attempt at a comprehensive 4E setting would be incomplete and likely not very well received. If a 3PP is in it for business reasons, that would not be a tempting prospect. I suppose a sort of generic setting that hinted and winked at some 4E connection might sell to some but not many I suspect.

If they have a cool idea for a new setting, I'd be interested, but I'd rather not have that new setting have a bunch of powers/classes etc.

I didn't buy Scarred Lands for the crunch.

Best option, I'd like the person to show me how the EXISTING material can be fit into their world.
