stupid magic missle question

fl8m

First Post
sigh, ok I've got a wizard with a wand of magic missles behind a wall of force. the wall completely blocks the passage to the wizard except for about a foot between the roof of the passage and the top of the wall. the wizard shoots a magic missle at the person on the other side of the wall of force. would the missle go over the wall throught the gap? or just uselessly slam into the wall of force?

The dm ruled the magic missles wouldn't go around the wall but into it so the wizard never even tried that tactic, but it's been making me wonder ever since..

A square foot opening in a wall (or Wall of Force in this case) is enough for spell effects to go through, I rule that the Magic Missile would indeed go over the wall.

You need a line of effect between you and the target for the magic missile to function. Now while it's true that a 1 foot opening is usually enough for a line of effect to exist, the 3E rules don't really cover combat in 3 dimensions that well, so it's up to the DM to adjudicate based on common sense. I would rule that such an opening, if it's at the top of the wall of force, blocks line of effect.

Magic missle can strike pretty much anything that doesn't have total cover or concealment. One example of total cover is standing on the other side of a solid wall, the situation you described above seems to match that description and so I would say that magic missle is an impossibility, unless the opponent for whatever reason was at the open space in which case I would say it provides 9/10ths cover, and then magic missle would work.

Notice that Shield spells gives protection from Magic missile. Missiles don't do around shield but simply hits it dealing no damage to shield owner.

Correct, and that is because the Shield spell spefically states that it protects you from Magic Missiles, not because of the cover gained.

That's Galstaff, Sorcerer of Light. Sheesh. :D

Aggeman, please go here and download the d&d mp3. Then the darkness comment will make sense!
