Summoners in D&D...

The dire badger's description does say that it leaves behind a usable tunnel.
The greatest problem facing summoners in my experience is multiple casters using Dispel Magic. Even lower-level casters will get lucky; a caster of equal level has a 50% chance of succeeding, but two casters of 4 levels lower will also have about the same chance between them (70% chance that either will fail, 49% chance that both will fail).

In our group's last fight against a large mixed group, when we were heavily outnumbered, I thought summoning would help balance the odds. But two clerics dispelled the first summons and one more used silence to interrupting and ruin the casting of the second. So, just went ape on them instead. I guess next time the rule is "kill the clerics first" before summoning things to take out the tough fighter-types.

This brings up a different question. Say a Summoner has a ring of Counterspells and is standing in the area of effect of a Dispel Magic that contains both him and the summoned creatures. Will the ring counterspell the Dispel Magic even though the summoner isn't specifically targetted?

Assuming the ring contains dispell magic, yes. The ring of counterspells does not seem to have the problem that a ring of spell turning has where it is useless against area spells.

What spells beside the obvious Summon Monster or Summon Nature's Ally are there?

While not a summoning spell, in 3.x summoning a monster did not break Invisibility. Combo that with either Silent Spell meta magic feat or a Silence spell strategically placed is just a killer package for a summoner.

Neutral good clerics as summoners

Hello - I'm relatively new to D&D, and this is my first time as a cleric (playing 3.5). I was looking for guidance as to how to summon a monster, and what kind of monsters can be summoned. The highest I can use is Summon Monsters II. Can I summon ANY monster that is neutral (or good), but no higher than CR 3? I'm confused! Help! :-(
