Kreynolds, you're the Rules Pimp. Shouldn't you...uh... Be contributing more?
Yeah, you're right. OK. After thinking about this, I would have to say "no" as to whether or not I think it's a great idea as is, mostly because it complicates a rule that I don't think is broken or needs fixing/patching/updating/reworking.
First, you run into the problem that IceBear pointed out with the archer stepping back and shooting you, you step forward and ready, the archer stepping back and shooting you, you step forward and ready, the archer stepping back and shooting you, you step forward and ready, the archer stepping back and shooting you, you step forward and ready, the archer stepping back and shooting you, you step forward and ready, etc, etc, etc. (OK. Maybe I could have shortened that a bit.

)
Also, it puts a solid rule into the hands of the DM to make snap judgements about, and half the time, snap judgements aren't very reliable, IME. To take care of the snap judgement problem, you could just build a list of weapons that you can't sunder by readying an action, a list of weapons that you can't sunder at all, and a list of weapons that you can't do one or the other or either with. For me, that's a bit too much modification.
Does the house rule have potential? Absolutely. Am I still interested? You bet. Does it have drawbacks? Sure, but that doesn't automatically mean that it's implausible. YMMV.
