The movie was fun, but for me, I’m not sure Gunn’s style was a great fit for Superman.
Certainly better than anything Snyder did, but still not quite right.

I think Gunn works better when writing for the more unknown D-list characters.
For example, Mr Terrific was my favourite character in the film, I’d love to see him get his own spinoff movie or series. The goofiness feels more like parody when applied to Superman compared to GotG.

Happy to see where DC go from here, if a little worried that DC is going to feel more like Marvel than ever before.

As an action summer movie, it was entertaining! Most of the audience in my showing were older than I was (so definitely had seen the 1978 movie).

It could've benefited possibly from a slightly longer run time, or perhaps a bit more attention to Clark's every day with the cast at the Daily Planet?

No question it had heart and earnestness.

As I said in the final trailer thread, I really liked it, but not as much as the 1978 film or Man of Steel, but I was overall pleasantly surprised. A few spoiler-y thoughts....

I'm guessing the Engineer shows up in the Supergirl film. She was last seen seemingly dead or passed out, iirc. I kind of hope she has a redemption arc, as she had glimmers of humanity.

I don't love the twist that his Kryptonian parents wanted him to rule over humanity - I was hoping that would be revealed to be Luthor doctoring the film. Bradley Cooper as Jorel...meh.

I agree that Superman wasn't quite as mighty as he should have been, and paled a bit in screen presence to Cavill. I also think they overused the "Person about to get crushed, but look, there's Superman holding the building/kaiju up. Somehow, despite gravity."

Luthor was kind of boring. For me he was the worst version we've seen. I like Hoult, but he didn't bring a twist to it like Eisenstein's loopy tech billionaire or Spacey's excellent Hackman homage. Hackman remains the guy, but he's a tough act to follow.

Guy Gardner and Mr Terrific were both great, though their costumes were a bit goofy, especially Guy's. Hawkgirl was a bit background and one-dimensional.

It took me a bit to realize that the president of Borovia was the same actor as the Russian billionaire in 2012.

Saw it today, absolutely loved it. To me this was Superman. Hopeful, earnest, and even naively believing the best in people. I liked that most of his fights focused on him saving people and trying to limit damage rather than the raw battle. That to me is Superman in a way that Man of Steel really missed....in this movie saving people was the focus rather than the epic battle moments. We see that in the Kaiju fight, Superman is holding back trying to save the Kaiju as much as anyone else. He could destroy him easily, but he doesn't want to...and that's the point. That's why Superman works.

People are saying the plot was disjointed....I don't get that at all. Now was it an over the top comic book plot....sure its a comic book movie, but the plot itself flowed fine from one element to the next.

Hoult's Lex was just alright until the scene where he russian rouletted that guy....than he became a true menace. Until that moment he was just an over the top comic book villain. But in that moment he became a stone cold killer, and it added a ton to the character. I also really loved the end scene where Superman says he's driven by envy....and this Lex completely owns it. He understands his own mind, he knows EXACTLY why he does what he does, no compromise, no backpedaling, loved it. Last thing about Lex is that this version made sense to me in terms of...he has been building this master plan for YEARS. His pocket universe, the clone, the kaiju, the barovia....all apart of a master plan to take out Superman. And he's goal is to do in one fell swoop. Superman is not even aware of Lex as anything more than another super tech billionaire, Lex has kept all of his plans underwraps waiting for this moment when he brings it all out on the table to finish Superman once and for all. The whole "he has memorized his fighting sequences over 3 years and created 2500 different moves to counter him"....that one sentence showcased Lex's brilliance and the level of planning that went into this.

People talked in the media about this being an immigrant story but honestly didn't get that at all. Instead...this was a story about cancel culture. We literally saw how the modern day media could be turned against even someone as good as Superman...and it was a very believable vision.

I liked Krypto overall, he was juuuuust about to overstay his welcome but I think he was limited enough that it worked. Lois was also rock solid, perfect rendition.

So that's my heaps of praise, now I'll dig in to a few problems:

1) After Superman returns to the fortress and finds it decimated, the next scene he immediately goes after Lex. But this Superman has never interacted with Lex Luthor and has no knowledge that Lex is the one that went to the fortress. It felt like there was a connecting scene cut out there. Now I could believe there was some footage in the fortress showing Lex was there...but it was a no show kind of situation.

2) The Kent's accents...I don't mind that kind of thick accent its perfectly fine for midwest farmers...but then its like "why doesn't Clark have a thick accent?" That kind of accent is hard to shake.

3) The Jor-El/Lara plot swap is going to piss off the purists and I respect that for some that’s a dealbreaker. The first part about humans being simple and confused...sure to a highly advanced civilization we will absolutely look that way. The second part about taking lots of women and repopulating Krypton's genetics...hey I get it, you want to rebuild your people I can respect that. But then the third part about "kill anyone who stands in your way and show no mercy".....ok THAT was over the top and probably not even needed. the whole "Secret harem" thing would have been enough to start getting people to question Superman's motives and why he's really here...you don't have to have the Kryptonians go full dark side.

4) I can respect the notions that Superman never feels as "epic" as Man of Steel superman. Like I said this was a focus on Superman's heart over his power....but it would have been nice to get at least one scene of some raw epic awesome.

5) As much as this movie goes out of its way to showcase Superman's love of life (we even see him save a squirrel!), his killing of Ultraman is really cold...literally no reaction. That was a big tonal miss in another pitch perfect rendition of Superman's character.

Loved the film. Liked it so much that I won’t list what I liked, because I’d write a whole testament. I have a few very minor complaints:

I got the feeling that some scenes with the Daily Planet cast and with Ma & Pa Kent were left on the cutting room floor. The film just felt incomplete in that regard.

Hoult, an actor I usually adore, was fine. I prefer Luthor more Machiavellian, though I find the Hackman/Spacey one wonderfully fun as well. I never quite acclimated to Hoult’s portrayal. I see what they were going for and largely appreciate the real-world parallels, but he just wasn’t fun in a movie where everyone else is a blast (even his henchmen!).

I do not mind the twist about the Els, but it was delivered in a somewhat joking manner and followed up multiple times as a gag (“do you have a harem?”). I liked all the other humor in the film but this bit distracted from the part the reveal played in Superman’s arc.

Loved everything else. Corenswet was absolutely wonderful; hope to see him again in the suit many times.

I've not followed Superman stories incredibly closely, but can understand people questioning this change. There was a bit of a reaction to this in the theater I was in.

I feel at least for this film; it highlighted Clark's feelings over "what should I be doing in light of this?" part of the story. This change also solidified the bonds Clark has with his adoptive parents, which we had a terribly small amount of screen time on.

One other brief thought was for future films, it's a plausible avenue to explain attitudes other Kryptonians may have, should they make an appearance.

I agree that Superman wasn't quite as mighty as he should have been, and paled a bit in screen presence to Cavill. I also think they overused the "Person about to get crushed, but look, there's Superman holding the building/kaiju up. Somehow, despite gravity."

Everyone who I went with, felt he was pretty mighty. However, they hadn't seen any of the MCU/DC movies. Their knowledge of comic book heroes have been word of mouth from peers, or what they've happened to pick up online.

Luthor was kind of boring. For me he was the worst version we've seen. I like Hoult, but he didn't bring a twist to it like Eisenstein's loopy tech billionaire or Spacey's excellent Hackman homage. Hackman remains the guy, but he's a tough act to follow.

Hoult placed his impression on that character. This Luthor come across as more relatable in the sense of the following. Someone had mentioned the roulette scene as being a turning point. What I felt was just as effective wasn't necessarily so much what Luthor said or did, but us seeing the fallout in the smaller bits: how he treats former lovers, how his employees respond having to scramble to pick up pencils off the ground, Luthor's riff off monkeys-typing-Shakespeare-- sure, he's brilliant enough to have devised a better method that would cost less, but he's so petty and chooses this way instead, his utter callousness towards the people of Metropolis, etc.

As one character quipped at the end, everyone hates or can't stand Lex Luthor. Anyone who has worked, knows that guy on screen.

Agree there've been many excellent Luthors; I've liked the animated Lex Luthor. Any number of these would be difficult to surpass.
