I'd like to share the thoughts on my vote.
At first glance, Nystul's Aura looks
awesome. "You can change an aura" seems very powerful. Think of a
Super Saiyan hiding his power. Think of an
innocent child quietly bringing hope to a village. Yea! Great concept for a spell involving auras, ki, essence, and magic. And the name "Nystul" is unique and flavorful too! It avoids the overused vowels "a" and "e", without becoming a terrible name like Drittz or Linux. So overall, Nystul's Aura
looks very promising!
Unfortunately, when in-play, I find this spell disappointing. Hiding alignment isn't useful in 99% of game sessions, due to how alignment is downplayed in this edition. For example, the paladin doesn't bring detect alignment to the table anymore, leaving alignment's appearance mostly up to the GM and setting. Hiding magical properties just isn't beneficial, either. NPCs don't need this spell: usually the NPC is suspicious and assumes everything is deadly-magic-like, or the NPC is friendly and nice regardless of a character's equipment enchantments. For the PCs, players will cast detect magic on everything, and while " cursed items" and "nystul'd items" are shiggles the first time, the PCs will key into this and the spell again falls behind.
So Mr. Nystul, I had to downvote you. Is there anything you can do to earn my votes?
