I have picked up and read much of the Swashbuckling Adventures book. I am frankly puzzled by KK's pan of the book due to poor editing. I have found editorial/type-setting errors, however, I have not found the editing much of a problem. I have been able to read the book without difficulty, even with the occasional misspellings. To address a couple of issues raised by KK:
The Arcana system. At first level, characters are able to choose a Hubris (if good) or Flaw (if evil) in exchange for a bonus feat or special feat-like ability -- Virtue (if good) or Wile (if evil). The Hubrises and Flaws are all role-playing oriented, and are basically personality traits for characters. A Hubris or Flaw can be activated by a GM or other player to the detriment of the character with the Hubris or Flaw. I see no difficulty in understanding this system, even if more explanation may have been helpful.
Prestige Classes with Weaknesses. Some of the fighting-style oriented prestige classes refers to strengths and weaknesses of the style. This information is for role-playing purposes, and has no game mechanic attached to it.
Overall, I think the book is fine. Here are a couple of my problems with it:
Improved/Greater Sneak Attack: These feats raise Sneak Attack dice to 1d8/1d10. I think that this is excessive.
Cutlass: This weapon is 1d6/x4. I think the x4 multiplier is excessive for the cutlass.
Unarmored Defense Proficiency (Beginner/Intermediate/Master). These three feats grant a scaling AC bonus to a character based on level, ranging from +3 at level 1 (Beginner) to +17 at level 20 (Master). The only conditions are to take these feats and to not wear armor. I understand that the game designers are trying to encourage swashbuckling characters to stay out of armor. But what do you think?
